I learned today that it is much better to have the gas ports opened up and an adjustable gas "plug" than anything else if you want to cycle low brass/birdshot despite lots of shells being shot and the fouling building up.
Before I was running the lighter aftermarket recoil spring which would help eject the shell but in some cases not have enough oomph to seat the next shell. Further the lighter spring would create harsher recoil when using slugs.
Now I have the heavier (factory) spring installed and the gas ports opened to .077" (all 4). The stiffer factory spring pushes the next shell harder into battery and the more gas helps cycle against the stronger spring. Also now I have a much wider range to adjust the gas. Before on setting 4 out of 5 (most gas is #5) it would start to hiccup even with buckshot after it had been fouled.
I think the lighter spring is a BS quick fix but not best for long term reliability esp when it is fouled after 100+ shots without cleaning. I typically shoot 150-200 shells each outing, so until now I've noticed the reliability taper off.
Best of all, opening the ports is really easy to do. Worse of all, if you F up, I have no idea where to get Saiga 12 replacement parts. So...goodluck!
