Mossberg 590A1 weight issue

Hey everyone!

I love my 590A1, but it becomes a bit tiring to hold up after a while due to it's natural weight. I'm going to add a heat shield soon, making it even heavier.

My question is, is there a lighter aftermarket stock available for it that would negate the future heat shield weight I'm going to add? I'd want to steer away from tactical stocks because I'd like to keep it as close to original Milspec as possible. I'd be open to shorter stocks as well.

A lighter buttstock probably wont make that much of a difference. Much of the fatigue comes from the 590A1 having a heavy barrel (making it nose-heavy). Adding a heat shield will make that even worse.

Right - also, paradoxically, even if you do put that lighter buttstock on, which reduces the overall total weight, the weight distribution would make the gun even heavier in the nose, making it FEEL heavier. YMMV.

I you can't pick up and hold a shotgun, go to the gym and workout. I own a 590A1 and thought about the weight with 13 shells. 8+1(+4 in the stock) and was amazed at how light it actually is.

I have done extensive shooting with mine already IN the desert and have never had it get too hot to handle.

What purpose would the heat shield serve if you are concerned with weight?

The heavier barrel is already more protected and a better heat sink simply by virtue of it's greater thickness.

Personally I was glad it was heavy because I shoot heavy loads with it and discovered that I could not add a better recoil pad to the speedfeed stock without modifying the capacity of it (Although I figured out a way to get around it, it is not really necessary, the weight taking most of the recoil).

Are you over-extending your support arm? I used to do that, but now I've moved my support arm a little further back close to me and the weight issue seems to have gone away.

590s are light weight compared to other shotguns. (Benelli m4)

Anyone else see an emerging business opportunity here? A single membership, or bundled package membership, for Fitness, Firearms, and a Forge (or machine shop co-op).

To the OP, glad you asked that question. I was interested in the 590A1 for its beefier character. But I didn't buy one 'cause I couldn't find the specific model (w/ bead sights, etc) readily available. I ultimately went with Benelli basic Tactical and now find I am California-burdened with the imported-shotgun constraints. I cannot get within 100 feet of a magazine extension. (oh wait, that's not exactly the enacted law... maybe it's the one being drafted ). So, many of the Mossies or Rem's make a good choice.

One solution to the muscle strain is to use the longest shells the Moss will accept... then tired arms won't be the primary symptom.

Maybe a sandwich and some pushups would help.

I dont agree. ive been out shooting many different models of shotguns for a long time, and even after a couple hundred rounds out of a remington 870, which weighs the same as a stock 590A1, the only thing that really bothers me is my shoulder, and even that is negligible. it could be your stance, or how long you keep the gun shouldered in between shots.

Adding a lighter stock will just make the shotgun more front heavy and will throw off the balance even more.
If its really a problem go buy the barrel and mag tube from a 500 persuader. A lot lighter and with a Wolf spring you can make it a 8+1 not losing any capacity.
or you can go and start pumpin the weights. be careful because from what i understand some heat shields will not fit right on the 590s. For the most part heat shields are a waste of money IMO.

As for the shooting I had the same problem. After 50-80 rounds I was sore. i took a shotgun class on how to CORRECTLY shoot a shotgun and now I can pump out quite a bit of slug buck and bird before I get tired. Spend the money on a hooting class rather than add on crap. your 590 is already a good gun. Don't screw it up by adding a bunch of useless s*8t you will end up selling here for 1/2 the original price you paid.
