    My shoulder is sore!

I took my mossy 590 out and shot some clays yesterday. I just set the clays up on tumble weeds at various distances also tried hand throwing a few. It was a good time.
The gun has no mods except the ghost ring site it came with. I went through 3 25 round boxes of Federal High Brass Game loads #8 shot i picked up from wally world. This was the first time i took this gun out and tried to really make it work. Got it nice and hot . Needless to say when i woke up this morning my shoulder was sore.

I would like to get some of your opinions on the buttstock mods available. I was looking at a limbsaver pad and some of the other stuff brownells offers for it but i am not sure what to try first. DO you think should i get a pistol grip and adjustable stock. This is my go to home defense weapon. so i would like some thing that would suit it for both worlds.
    1. All guns are always loaded.
    2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
    3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target.
    4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

Get a limbsaver and have someone with experience help you make sure you're shouldering the shotgun properly.

Unless you need to adjust the stock, an adjustable stock isn't going to do anything other than lighten your wallet. Pistol grip is all a matter of personal preference.

Sore shoulder means you had a good time =)

You get used to it after a while unless you shoot a lot...

I dont use anything to help with recoil, I do have a pistol grip adjustable stock mossberg, the stock is pretty solid and wont help with recoil.

Sounds like the gun doesn't fit you properly. Get it fit first, then worry about the pad. I've gone more than 1k in a day without a sore shoulder.

Generally speaking if your shoulder is sore after 75 rounds, you're not mounting the gun as well as you could / should. Using a GRS for wing shooting, which is going to force your head somewhat up and forward on the stock (usually) is not going to help.

You can certainly accomplish some good effect with changing to a softer pad, with Limbsaver being something of a gold standard for a non-sporting gun. It's what I would choose if I was going to put a different pad on a 590.

However, you'll get a lot more effect by shouldering the gun properly. Wing shooting and defensive shooting with a shotgun are entirely different disciplines with different approaches. Shooting at hand thrown clays, or any clays for that matter, will help you become a better shot with a shotgun because it teaches you to point the gun, rather than aim it which is exactly what it's designed for.

In addition to what BigDog said, if you want to use your gun for other than HD, can the pistol grip. Look into the Hogue stocks. They have a pad built in and give a grip second to none. They are also available in different LOP.

Sounds like you're not shouldering the gun correctly and not leaning into it. Only part of the pad is on your shoulder, so you're going to feel some discomfort.

I tried all the aftermarket shoulder pads. While they help a lot, none of them completely eliminated shoulder soreness for me, especially if I haven't shot in a long time. You just get used to it after a while.

You do get use to it over time, and if you're new it can hurt a bit. However, like others have said, it's most likely to not getting a good shoulder mount. It takes a while. When you get it right you can take a 1917 Remington Mosin-Nagant NRA-Sporter with the metal buttplate to the range and not worry about a thing.

Get the low Brass shells, the soreness will also disapear when you mount it properly.

Get some proper instruction as well.

No, a sore shoulder means there is something wrong. Do not try to get used to it. That is the worst advise you could get. Do not think that you're a wimp because you can't handle a 12g. See the post below and take kmca's advise.

I figured out that I wasn't leaning my shoulder into it enough. Once I did that, I never really had any problems. I'll get the red shoulder a little bit, but not bad at all. I just figured out when I looked at this earlier why I actually hurt my shoulder for a couple of days holding a .270. I put 20 rounds through it and I was actually hurting the next day. Sometimes it takes reading something or being told to realize that you aren't doing something correctly.
