You don't NEED to do anything to that gun, but have at it with whatever you WANT to do to it! Shell holder, ATI folding stock (with shell carrier), heat shield and whatever that shark-tooth muzzle thingy they have now is.

All you need to do is load, shoot, repeat. It's a great piece right out of the box.

Now, if you want to tacticool it, add a rail, some sort of red dot sight, something to carry more rounds, folding stock if it floats your boat, a minimag (led version) but you don't need a drink holder.

Where are we going that it's getting this hot and why am I in this hand-basket?

There are really only 4 things needed to have a good Defensive shotgun, no matter which action type or gauge you pick.

#1 : Which ever gauge you pick make sure that birdshot is only used for small pests and operation drills on the range, buck shot of all sizes are a good choice for home/personal defense,as well as slugs (depending on where you call home).

#2 : Train with it as often as you can afford both time wise, and budget wise (set aside the time and money if/when you can)

#3 : At the minmum all a good HD/SD shotgun needs is a sturdy light and mount, also a supply of extra ammo on either a sidesaddle or cheapo elastic ammo carrier
(the key to this being....use a stock not a PGO setup it provides no real advantage over a standard or "tactical" stock).

#4: An owner that can hit what they intend to hit,and do so repeatedly if needed.

It isn't the size of your hallway howitzer,it's how you use it.

My 500 is basically the way i bought it. The only thing I would even remotely add to it would be a side shell carrier and thats only for the quick loading. i tried a few different tactical/HD stuff ( pistol grip 3 different ones, heat shield, sights I even tried my buddy's Remington that has a fore grip light set up. Even that was a meh proposition) thinking its gonna make a difference. yeah it made a difference. In my wallet. I had to sell the stuff for 1/2 of what i paid for it. I went back to original and never looked back. The side shell carrier would be a good add on IMO simply because unless you sleep with extra ammo in your underwear or strapped to your hairy back ammo is within reach. Otherwise I wouldn't bother with that either.

like the other guys said. Spend the money on a good shotgun course.

Sounds like I have the right idea. I was thinking some large sights like on the 930SPX would be easier for the wife to see.....but then again I think range time is a better option. Thanks folks, on a mission to order my Mesa Tactical Side Saddle.
