Hello everyone a while back I was looking deep into a shotgun for HD, SHTF use and hunting (probably never) and was wondering if anyone would recommend something else. The H&R PP seemed a good choice since from what I have read its a cheaper and just as good 870. I thought about a Mossberg but didnt like it when I fired it at the range. I plan on only getting a new forend (either the pistol grip or one with a rail) and putting on a TLR-1.

N&R Parder Pump Protector or something else?

The Stevens and Hawks are good and only $199.00 at Big 5. If you're gonna hunt of trap/skeet shoot the 5 has the mossburg 500 combos but they're $299 or so I think. Other than that you're gonna spend $300-$400 bucks easy. You need to
1. define your spending limit.. first priority
2. Define your purpose... HD only will be way way less expensive than the "might hunt or trap shoot" purpose. As for a light /shrug ....fun for looking tacticool but really you're not Sonny Crocket searching out the bad guys. KISS is my motto. I have an AR for tacticool shooting and I have a no frills 1911 for CCW and 12 guage Remington clone for HD...My HD/CCW weapons are just that straight forward, simple, reliable defense platforms."Men sleep peacefully in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."

If your budget is $500, get an Remington 870 with a 28" barrel from Big 5 or somewhere, order an 18.5" Barrel for a $100 or so, and you are good to go!John 3:16Comment

870 has a long track record of sucess, TONS of aftermarket parts, and probably will hold their value much better than the H&R. I am not sure of the compatability of Remington parts with the H&R, but if you are wanting to accessorize the shotgun, I belive the 870 will have many more options.
Just the way I view it.John 3:16Comment

I have a H&R PP and I have a feeding issue
basically the Shell latch is getting caught and a new round won't go into the chamber because it gets stuck.
Here is a video of my H&R
I tried calling H and R to replace that shell latch but they said they had no clue what I was talking about and could not send an extra part to me
Now don't get me wrong the shotgun still works but I cannot load anything into the tube or it gets stuck. I have to do chamber loads.
Oh also first time going to the range I was super excited to shoot it and I brought slugs, buck and bird shot. shoot bird its fine shoot buck that goes fine. then I shoot Slugs and my front bead falls off! I was like wtf?!?!
Save yourself the trouble and get an actual remy. If I were to buy a shotgun again it would be a Remington or a mossberg. Also with the Pardner pump you need to send the shotgun to the manufactuer to get a new barrel if you wanted one. with mossberg and Remington you can order off their website without sending yours.Last edited by Hagendazs; 03-13-2012, 6:04 PM.Comment

huh... has anyone else had these problems and are you sure you didn't get one that wasn't up to... actually never mind man, Remington it is
costs more but heck, you get what you pay for and that even though some may say the PP is better built then the 870 (I held a PP at the local big 5 and it felt really nice in the hands), the ability for ease of repair and it seems like a reliable platform says it all. I am thinking about an 870, but would anyone recommend another Remington shotgun model?

I believe that the PP is patterned after the 870. If thats the case you have two shell latches that are staked in place. These latches will allow one round from the mag tube to drop onto the shell carrier(elevator) and the other latch will hold the following shell(interrupter) in place. Also inspect the magazine throat for damage because if damaged it will allow double feeds.
If you want to do the fix yourself, get yourself that 870 manual IIRC from Kuhnhausen. If not get hold of a smith and he can order the parts and do the fix. Probably the fix would be close to half of the price of the gun.Comment

Yeah If anything I may just buy a new shotgun. I tried bending the shell latch just right but it didn't work out/ not too reliable. I was looking to get it fixed but like you said bringing it to a gunsmith would cost half the gun and its not worth it. so side loading with a tactical loader is fine with me.Comment

I did the same thing read tons of online reviews and what not and was totally set on the PP and how it was better than the 870. took it out the first day and totally regretted it. spend the extra $100huh... has anyone else had these problems and are you sure you didn't get one that wasn't up to... actually never mind man, Remington it is

Did I understand some to say the H&R is better built then the 870?
Let's see. Remington has owned H&R for what, 6 years now. So they import a copy of their best selling model that is built better and cost half as much. Does anyone see the conflict here? No, because there is not one. The H&R clone is not built better. It is built for the import clone market. It is what it is and guys who are coming on here making it more then that may convince some Newbee's but few others.
With that said, the weapon works fine and it sounds like the the one guy just got a lemon. Others have sucess with these weapons and enjoy them. They understand what they paid for.JD McGuire, Owner
