Took a friend out for trap a couple of weeks ago- gave her some basic instruction -she had never shot a gun before- 8/25 on a 20ga model 12 and then 17/25 on a beretta semi. Like the others said, trap is a simple game, but some have good coordination, adapt well/take to it quickly etc. - so its less 'natural trapshooting' and more a person's existing ability set exercised in a specific activity - But that still doesn't eliminate shotgun fit, proper form, and lots and lots of rounds downrange
That's what I like about trap- the real difficulty lies in the focus required to hit target after target over and over and over- I've got only one hunnerd straight so far and its been fun and sometimes frustrating to get a 25 or 50 before or after botching a round ...lost!
Now sporting clays- that's humbling

I'm of the "focus" "hand-eye coordination" crowd. Enthusiasm can aslo be a factor.
My dad took me trap shooting for the first time when I was a kid. I shot 20 out of 25 and had never handled a shotgun. I was also very quick on the shot.
He was dumbfounded.

Try shooting trap with a .410... I did that this weekend for the first time. I normally hit around 20-24 with my 12 gauge O/U. I hit 18 with the .410. The first two I missed. The gun was so light I shot over the bird. Once I slowed down, I was doing well. I think that also tells me that I need to slow down with the 12 gauge and I might hit more. If the weather is good enough, I think I might go again. That was just to much damn fun with the smaller gun. Maybe is was because I haven't shot it in over 20 years, but shooting the .410 was more exciting.Comment

I typically shoot 22-24/25 and I have never taken a lesson. 16 yard trap is easy. If you think you are getting too good, just shoot some doubles and or International, from back at 21 or 25 yards. You'll be humbled pretty quickly, a whole different game.
I couldn't agree more about sporting clays, best I have ever done was 62/100. MUCH more challenging and fun than trap. I want to try skeet as well, have never even tried it.
