Need a Zombie ready shot gun.

I bought this Mossberg 590 years ago and put a pistol grip on it and a forward grip. I have to admit it looked cool. Practical? No. Cool, Hell yea! After coming to my senses and realizing I am never going to shoot it in this condition, I removed the front hand grip and put the factory grip back on. It still looks cool but is impractical for shooting.

Ok, few questions. I need a rear stock with pistol grip and am leaning towards the blackhwawk knoxx stock. What do you guys think.

Also I have a triicon reflex sight that is on a m-16 base. I was thinking about puttin some rails on the mossy and mounting up the sight. Would this be practical on a shotgun?

Not a fan of the recoil pulse with those stocks. I fired a 500 w/ one and it just didn't feel right compared to my 590a1. I'd recommend finding someone who has one and firing their shotgun first.

I can't comment on optics on a shotgun as I've never run with one on. For fast target acquisition I like my 590a1's ghost ring rear, although the front sight could use some loven. I think it's just a sticker or painted on.

Fire your shotgun with low recoil LE 00 buckshot (Federal is a good choice) using the original stock first. Figure out if you are shouldering properly, if the stock fits you properly and then decide if you still need a recoil absorbing stock. They have their applications, but they do not replace proper technique with the original stock (you will have to "relearn" shouldering however, since the technique that works for a conventional stock would pre-load the springs in the Knoxx SpecOps stock and defeat much of the absorption).

Rifle sights are of questionable utility on HD shotguns, though it does allow for dual use for sporting purposes such as deer hunting or target shooting with slugs. Reflex sights are an exercise in futility for HD use for much the same reason - 3-7 yards just doesn't require them and questions about fragility and battery life become more important. At these distances, you need to learn to reliably point the shotgun, the front sight might not even be visible. If it doesn't help, it probably hurts. The most basic bead front sight shotgun is generally the better choice. Spend your money on ammo and a tactical training course or two which is guaranteed to help you hit your target more consistently, whereas the reflex sight probably will not.

I've heard more than a couple people say that a plain shotgun with a bead front sight is best for HD, but my experiences shooting 2 or 3 shotguns with the bead sight vs my 870 with low profile ghost rings to be night and day - I'll never go back.

I even shot clays with it, and I find that if I don't have time to stop and actually aim a shot like an oversized rifle, it point shoots great by ignoring the ghost ring. There's been quite a few times that when I hesitated or fumbled shooting the clay on the rise, I've actually put the sights to use and made some pretty long shots on distant clays with an 18" barrel. Blasphemy, I know.

Anyways, in my experience, you don't lose anything with ghost rings, and if they're about to get in your way on that 5 foot away "oh $#it!!" reflexive shot, just point it.

I have LPA ghost ring sights on my 590 as well (the rear base can slide of the picatinny rail, the barrel can come out and be replaced and I'm back to ordinary bead and notch in a matter of minutes). I don't have any fancy sights for my 500 with the currently fitted 18.5 inch cylinder bore "security" barrel. Both can serve HD functions, the 590 as currently fitted (I have two barrels for each) has the superior sights for aimed shooting over distance. The 500 as it is configured right now is better suited for instinctive styles of shooting where the sights aren't even used and might just get in the way (at least for me). The notion of "dual use" - hunting with your shotgun, may change your requirements somewhat. Mossberg makes some great pairings of two barrels as part of a package deal with the shotgun. One barrel is intended for sporting purposes, generally with a 28" ribbed barrel with choke tubes and the other with an 18.5 or 20" cylinder bore marketed as a "Security" model.

Depending on what you shoot, the distances you plan to shoot and where, ghost ring sights may or may not make sense. I'm of the mind that the reflex sight, however cool looking it might be, is probably the least useful. The decent quality reflex sights will cost more than the shotgun and then there is the question of how hard a bump it can take on a door jam in the pitch black and how long the batteries last, or how quickly you can remove a damaged unit to get back to basics in a hurry are all considerations strongly against these types of new-fangled sights. At 3-7 yards, a fancy sight system is just not needed.

I was watching the "Walking Dead" TV series. Great show btw and noticed that one of the characters is using what looks like a Mossberg 590. I hadn't drug my shotgun out of the safe in over 7 years - I just never shoot it. Anyway I was never happy with the current config and thought a pistol grip and real butt stock would be a nice upgrade. New toys are always nice. The last time I looked at my options if I remember correctly, there were top or side folders. I have never been a fan of side folders and a top folder might get in the way of the safety. Neither really appealed to me. The telescoping pistol grip looked like a winner.

I am going to just keep the bead sight - I have a trijicon red dot sight that does not use batteries (yea it did cost more than the shotgun) that is just laying around and was going to use it, but I think good old fashioned iron is the way to go. Keep in mind I will put maybe 200 shells in her and I don't skeet/hunt/trap... It is just a big toy.

So, the stock is on order and I will post some pics of it when it arrives.

i have the nrs stock in the picture.... its nice... however the knox reoil stock sucks! unlesss after u shoot u like the feel like u just got into a bar fight and didnt cover up... lmao

Mesa Tactical high stock adapter with the enidine recoil buffer and something like a VLTOR E-Mod stock for a good cheek weld to line up the dot in the Trijicon.

I have a Knoxx Stock, had it on my 870. I ended up taking it off, too much cheek slap, and crappy cheek weld/sightpicture using a bead sight. With the Bsquare and a red dot it was decent but was still lacking a bit.

I have a 590 mariner. Chose the mariner because when the Zombies come out, I don't want their acidic membranes rusting my shotgun.

I bought a heat shield like yours and kept the original stock on it. Painted it camouflage and I'm good.

The Trijicon is likely to be a little bulky. You'd need to go to a Mesa Tactical high tube stock adapter or something similar and possibly even an additional cheek riser to get a proper cheek weld to use that sight.
