    870 super magnum question.

I have a 870 Super Mag. 26 inch model. Does anyone know if/where i could get say a 20 inch barrel for it and still be able to use 3 1/2 shells?

The shortest is the 21" vent rib turkey barrel. It is chambered for up to 3.5" shells.

It is part number 240333 on the Remington parts list.

You could always get a second barrel and cut it down.

What would you be hunting/shooting at with the 20" barrel? If it's for defensive purposes, I would strongly recommend against using 3 1/2" shells...

I just wanted to know what options were out there. Its primarily my bird gun but I also wanted a shorter barrel for HD an the occasional dickin around ya know.

I can't think of any reason to use shells bigger than 3"

The 3-1/2 shells were designed for steel waterfowl loads. If steel shot wasn't mandatory for waterfowl, the 3-1/2 shell would never have been invented.

I have the same 870 super mag but found a used 20" police barrely with 3" chamber works great I definately don't see the need for 3.5" HD rounds

There are several reason he could want the option. The barrel I gave him the part number for would serve as an HD barrel with 2.75" shells, a hunting barrel with 3" shells and a Turkey gun with 3.5" shells.

He has a Super Mag 870 and wants to have the options if he ever wants to take advantage of the 3.5" receiver. Nothing wrong with that.

So for those of you that can't think of a reason he wants this barrel I have just given you the reason and that is because he wants it. If you don't want such an option don't buy a 3.5" receiver. I don't have one, don't need one and don't want one but some guys do and nothing wrong with that for them.

I too was considering the idea of making a universal purpose 870 using a SuperMag, but installing a ~20 inch barrel, and as much magazine extension as will fit without extending beyond the muzzle. AIPPI - good call on the turkey barrel, it'd be nice to buy a factory part instead of trying to cut one down and have it bored and threaded for a choke.

I think the allure isn't in hosing some unsuspecting home intruder down with 3.5 supermag shells (though you can get 3.5" Winchester 18 pellet 00 buckshot ammo at walmart - nothing like firing TWO normal 00 loads simultaneously...). It'd be nice to have one gun that will serve in home defense, hunting, and be a maneuverable turkey gun all in one. Plus, in a pinch, you can fire any 12 gauge round ever made safely.

But the very best thing you can do with 3.5" supermag? Load one and hand it to a buddy who brags constantly what a badass he is and how big of guns he shoots and tell him it's birdshot. Not that I've ever done such a thing.

CDNN is selling 20" barrels for the 870. Their ad says that if installed on a Standard receiver, they can use 2 3/4". If installed on a Magnum receiver, they can use 3" shells. So, I am wondering if they will work for 3 1/2" if mounted on a Super Magnum receiver? Since I don't have one, I can't check.

                      BTW, price is only $70.

Those CDNN barrels are not chambered for 3.5". Also, if you look at them they are not OEM as the bead is not on a pedestal but drilled and tapped right into the barrel. If by some chance they are OEM they are years old as Remington has been mounting the bead sight on a pedestal for a lot of years now.
