sbs questions

I was at a local firearms dealer recently and was inquiring about how to get a sbs, they told me that it was as easy as filling out a few forms and paying an inexpensive (i think he said it was $5) tax stamp on top of the dros fee.

Has anyone on here gone through the process of getting a sbs or sbr?
is it really that simple?

Also is the process pretty much the same for taking a shotgun i already own and making it into a sbs?

Yeah. tax for AOW is $5. SBS is $200.

what would an aow stamp cover?
and would you need the nfa trust for the aow also?

The above is pretty much golden as I understand it. An AOW, like a Serbu Super Shorty is a $5 fee, but it's a whole lot of paperwork, money and time prior to purchase / delivery to put the necessary conditions into effect. Thread on how to do all that is at this link.

There is pretty much no way to make a shotgun you already have into an SBS in California that I know of. Doing so is likely going to equal a felony arrest when you get caught with it.

im betting its an AOW. its almost impossible to own a non C&R SBS.

NFA trust took me about 30 minutes, right at the gun shop. $200. Done. NFA form for my AOW took less than 30 days then the 10-days for CA. Easy as pie.

I did the math, if you want to have a fairly legally tight NFA Trust, it is $600.00 to $800.00, plus $750.00 + tax, DROS, tax stamp so you are at least at $1,500.00 to have a legal SBS. Cool, but not worth it to me. You can setup the NFA trust using a document service or a gun shop but how legally sure are you that every eventuality is covered?

If you are ever caught for a mistake on your NFA trust, and are convicted of a felony, you wave goodbye to all of your guns forever. Not worth the risk. BTW, have you ever shot an SBS? Not very fun, major recoil and blast. Good for home defense but everywhere you take it, you have to take a copy of your NFA paperwork, explain it all to whomever, etc.

I have evaluated and for me, just not worth it although I am tempted just because I CAN buy one. But for the same money, I can buy a CMP M1, ammo and a nice, new CZ75 SP-01. Two much more fun guns IMHO.

My trust was $200, and vetted by both the gun shop and BATF. The trust paperwork stays in the safe and I have a scanned copy. It is only a few pages. The NFA paperwork is one page, it is in the safe with a copy of it being in the gun case along with the DROS, Calguns flow chart showing legality, roster list, and the AOW itself.
