    Mossberg Maverick

I was all set to buy a Benelli nova to use for skeet. Big5 has them on sale for
$419. Then I saw this neat over under in their latest ad. It's a Mossberg Maverick O/U for $329.

I'm buying 1 of these. But could use the advice from anyone who owns either. $329 for an O/U seems cheap. I'm leaning toward the Nova since I know Benelli makes good stuff.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I just went to Big5 and handled both. The Nova was much nicer.

The cheaper price comes from the synthetic stock and the fact it's made in Turkey. Now, plenty of guns are coming out of Turkey that are quality guns, but some would still prefer American or Italian craftsmanship. The nice thing about the Benelli is that you have alternatives, you can use it for breaking clays, hunting, and you can buy an additional shorter barrel and use it for Home Defense (I'm of course assuming you are looking at the 28" field gun). I do work at a Big 5 (not in your area), and I can say that so far, since we've been carrying the Maverick O/U, I have not any purchasers come back complaining about their experiences with it.

            Maverick O/U

I just bought one yesterday. I was leaning in getting another 500 combo for use when I have friends that want to go with me trap shooting. I went for the Maverick O/U because it felt good in my hands and I wanted a shotgun with a heavier barrel for skeet. I think this is a good buy since it is priced well, $329, and you cant go wrong with a Mossberg/Maverick. I asked the Big 5 gun sales associate about the cons, only thing he said was that it can only hold 2 shells. Well, that's why I have my 500 combo. Can't wait to shoot both off at the same time!

I've got a Nova and it's never let me down.

+1 for the Nova. As others have pointed out above, there are numerous replacement barrels and aftermarket accessories available (although the Benelli barrels are much more expensive than comparable ones from Mossberg or Remington) to set it up to do just about anything that you might want to do with a shotgun. Not to poop in anyone's Cornflakes but... IMO, that Maverick is just about the cheapest, lowest-quality, most poorly finished O/U you could ask for. I imagine that most of the Maverick purchasers aren't coming back to Big 5 to complain about their guns because (A) they probably don't shoot them all that much and/or (B) don't have any experience with a well-made O/U for comparison. You will never, ever, ever, EVER see competitive shooters using these guns. It has been said many times, in many places: if you want a decent O/U in the <$1000 range, look for a used one from a quality manufacturer. Otherwise, buy the Nova-- you'll be much more satisfied in the long run.

***and rswarrior1700, I think you are talking about the pump guns for $199, not the O/U.

Well, sure, but I think the OP is specifically trying to decide between the Benelli Nova and Mossberg Maverick O/U "on sale" at Big 5. There are ~plenty~ of other guns out there that are worthy of consideration.

I was pretty much sold on the Nova, but was curious about that O/U Maverick. I've decided to get the Benelli. It's been on my want list for years.

I too just saw the ad for the Mossberg, I'm seriously considering getting one. Is it decent enough for ocassional clay shooting? That's all I will use it for. How is the 12 gauge kick, do you guys think my g/f will be comfortable shooting it? She can handle the AR-15 I have.

                          Thanks,
                          Emil
