Sight solution for Mossberg 590 A1

Hello all
Just picked up a Mossberg 590 A1 and it is drilled and tapped but no rear sights and has a bead sight on the front. I would like to here about different sight systems pros / cons. This weapon will have a rough life on our ranch always exposed to the elements. Its primary day use is for creatures from the forest, nite use will be by the couch.

I suppose if you need a sight system for it. You can always buy a rail for the top mount and put on a red dot sight of some sort.

Pros:
Fast target acquisition
Able to aim with bead still

Cons:
Depending on the cost of the red dot, it can be anywhere from $100 - $500 for a red dot.

Don't knock the bead. For the most part it will do you just fine. If you were using slugs I would suggest a ghost rings but hardly necessary...

That rail system is a little much for me. I have the ghost rings on my 930 SPX and they are pretty nice, I am leaning that way if I can not find anything else.

My advice: Think ahead a little.

Perhaps a different way of saying this: Learn from my mistakes.

I have two 590A1s with ghost ring and ramp front. Love them. At some point, decided I want to do some skeet shooting with one, which meant I had to replace the barrel (20") with something longer. Found a 24" barrel, with a bead.

The ghost ring wasn't going to work well with the bead, so I replaced it with a rail, and on top of it mounted a relatively inexpensive red dot sight.

Oh, wait -- now it was impossible for me to get a good sight picture, because the red dot was much, much higher than the ghost ring. OK! I'll use this as an opportunity to replace the stock with something a little more recoil-absorbing, for my wife. So I got the Knoxx recoil reducing stock. And then the cheek spacer to raise the cheek weld. Great, good cheek weld now.

Oh, wait -- I can't reach the safety anymore. OK! replaced the safety with the Cavalry Arms safety.

Except that the Cavalry Arms safety is only marginally easier to get, still requires me to break my hold, AND occasionally goes to safe just because of recoil.

So the simple decision to go with higher-precision sights led down a chain of decisions that left me with a shotgun I would not, currently, trust with my life (thankfully, A) I've got a second one; and B) I'm getting this one back to stock).

If you're going to do any sort of longer-range (50yds + with slugs) shooting, get the ghost ring option. Otherwise, stick to just the bead. You'll do fine.

i am not sure about adding a pound of rail weight to a shotgun but I would go with ghost ring sights. You can buy the mossberg ghost ring set (if you can find em) mossberg part number: 95300. LPA and XS both make sights as well but you would need a front sight base to use em, which adds cost.

Shotguns are pointed, not aimed. Find someone to teach you how to mount the gun, and learn to use the bead first.

If you're shooting turkeys, deer, and/or slugs at long range, a ghost ring or red dot might be something you'd want. Otoh, I've never missed deer at 50-75 yards with just a bead sight on the end of a Beretta o/u in 20 gage.

The rail shown in the link above will be useless for what you want the gun to do. It would be helpful for those who watch video games more than they actually shoot.

Get 3, thanks for the imput. The ghost rings will be ordered today. They will work great when I am needing to AIM and I should be able to point the weapon if it is needed in a up close situation with a lion or bear and the added weight might even help keep the muzzle down a little ha ha.
