Just Picked up my first Semi-autos!!!! Help?

Hey guys,

I am beyond excited about these semi-autos. Ithaca Model 51 Magnum and a Smith and Wesson Model 1000. Bought them used at Little Johns Gun auction and they seem to be in 96%+ condition. I have never had semi autos before so this will be a learning experience. Any help or trick tips would be highly appreciated. I intend to use these for trap and skeet shooting and maybe some upland game. Anyone out there have these models who can give some advice? Thanks

congrats on two sweet guns! honestly, my advice would be to grab a couple 100 shell packs from walmart and go out and shoot both of them until you are comfortable and dialed in. semi-auto's are a blast to shoot, and theyre a whole different experience from pump or over/unders

You might want to pull them apart and clean them first.

- My used one was filthy when I bought it...gas system was fouled.
- Make sure none of the internals are broken.
- Get familiar with the breakdown.

One more thing. Did they come with chokes? You might need those.

WJC: The S&W came with one choke (improved) and the Ithaca has a fixed choke (Full)

Like the others said...Just Learn how they function, keep em clean and oiled and shoot and shoot and shoot some more...

From what I've seen online, apparently there's some issues with the Ithaca...where did I see those plus some tips... here we go:

S&W 1000 pull off the forend check the rubber bushing?,I recall was a problem with them.Have fun

I usually avoid the Winchester cheap stuff from Walmart as the load seems to vary from round to round and can cause jams.... but I've had good luck with the similar priced Federal.

Check action bars on ithaca 51. IIRC action bars are prone to breakage and that part if you can find it is really expensive.
