    generally barrels are measured from the bolt face. Stick a wooden dowel down the barrel (of an unloaded gun!) with a closed bolt. Mark the length where the dowel exits the barrel. Measure the dowel. That's how "legally" long your barrel it.

      Nope, just like it was said above, just stick a long rod of any kind down the barrel with the bolt closed and mark where it comes out of the barrel. Measure from the bottom of the rod to the mark.

      It's like motorcycle engine sizes, a 750 cc engine may only be 742 cc in real life. A 24" barrel may be anywhere from 23.25" - 24.5" long. The manufacturers just round it off.

        Right, my "1100" is actually a 1064cc. With shotgun legal length barrels though it does matter. Thats why shotgun barrels are sometimes 18 1/2" to avoid trouble.
