870 Express - Failure to cycle

Was out trapshooting last night with my father, when the strangest thing happened. His 870 express fired, but would not cycle to eject the spent shell.
Pressing the slide release did nothing. Finally another shooter came over and grasped the pump handle, and bumped the buttpad on the ground, and it popped right open.

Any ideas as to what may have caused this? Is this normal?

    Thanks!

    Souske,

I'd recommend you to do a search on the topic, but no one ever does, and someone invariably will give you a fish anyhow.

    So...

The basic issue is cheap trap ammo. You can rack the slide with authority as your good Samaritan did, or:

It's funny people say this, because I used Remington slugs in mine and it still happened to me as well.

I used to have this problem too. I contacted JD from AIP Tactical and he said to put some steel wool on the end of a wooden dowel. Put the other end of the dowel into a drill and polish your chamber. Ever since I did that the gun has been running flawlessy. Hope this helps.

I was at the trap range the other night and had it happen to someone that jumped on the same bay as us. He kept having problems with it, and it was slowing everyone down. I went over, asked him what the problem was, and he showed me. I picked up one of his spent rounds, and saw a dark ring. When I asked how old the shotgun was, he said it was fairly new. When I asked if he cleaned it, he said NO. WTF. This also happened to a friend of mine's gun, and I ran a boresnake throught it at the range a few times, and it worked fine after. Pay special attention to the chamber, apparently there's some crud that gets in there.
