I thought Stevens was made in China and closely resembles the old Ithaca Model 37. Might be something to consider.
Turners has the Maverick 88 for $219.99. Maverick is made or assembled in Texas and is owned by Mossberg. I am told it shares some parts with Mossberg 500.
I almost bought a Maverick. I compared everything (including Stevens) in Big 5 and Turners and finally spent $299.99 on a Mossberg 500 Special Edition at Big 5. It has a 20" barrel, 8 shot capacity, gold trigger, and fiber optic front sight.
For me, the Mossberg felt a lot better than anything else. It was worth the extra $80 to $100.
