What to look for in used shotgun

I'm looking to buy a shotgun for around $300 ish. I was going to get the mossberg combo for big5 because of the price, but my friend is offering his remington 870 12g 18.5" for $280. What should I look at to make sure everything is okay. I've never shot a shotgun before, but just looking to get one for HD.

Take it to the range. If it runs without any hic-ups then buy it. Make sure it feeds shells and ejects them without any problems. It's an 870 and if it is doing that it is working as designed.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

Has anyone thought of taking it to the range?

If it gets stuck ejecting, it may not be the gun, but cheap ammo. I have an o/u and an 870. I can put whatever in the over under yet sometimes the ammo will be a little tight because I just shoot the Walmart/Winchester target loads. Cheap, but does the job. Some of them may get stuck in the 870 as its ejecting because the round is slightly larger then it should be. Take it to the range, shoot it, pattern it at different ranges, and shoot different types of ammo through it. That way you can get a feel for it. Also make sure when you cock it, it feels smooth and not gritty.

                      ><

Perhaps a little info about shotguns and how to shoot a shotgun. Then you will better prepared to make a purchase

I always try to give innovative and fresh advice, so here you go:

Take it to the range. If it runs without any hic-ups then buy it. Make sure it feeds shells, fires and ejects them without any problems. It's an 870 and if it is doing that it is working as designed.

As an alternative to the FUD already spread all over this thread, give this a try:

Take it to the range. If it runs without any hic-ups then buy it. Make sure it feeds shells, fires and ejects them without any problems. It's an 870 and if it is doing that it is working as designed.
