    Upgrade from Mossberg 500?

I have a Mossberg 500 (police style) that I've had for a long time. I've learned that some people frown upon this shotgun because the safety can fall off.

    I am on a budget.

Should I get an 870? or just stay with my Mossberg?

Any cheaper alternatives to Benelli for a semi-auto combat shotgun?

Also, what is the preferred set up for a light?

You can upgrade the safety with a steel one from Brownells. You dont have to get a new gun just for the plastic safety

Not me personally. But it's a problem that I hear online about the 500. I guess thats why they sell a kit to redo the safety with a metal one.

No, but I have seen them get loose and then the safety goes on/off at random. However, my 500 probably has tens of thousands of rounds through it and this hasn't happened yet.

That's quite an upgrade at least in price. New Ithaca 37 run around 6-7 hundred dollars now IIRC. Browning bps may be another choice .

I'd keep the Mossberg500 and I've never seen the safety fall off either or work its way loose, except for some stories on the interweb.

I prefer the tang mounted safety of the mossberg, but other so don't. There is no "preferred" setup with a light. Just whatever you do, make sure you practice with your light.

There are many good semi-auto shotguns out there that are cheaper than the benelli, but none of them are clones of the benelli.

When I was shopping for a semi-shot gun, I went to the store to buy a benelli m4, I bought a mossberg 930spx and built a AR15 with the left over money I saved. I'm pretty damn happy with the SPX and my AR.... You have to ask yourself is the benelli worth the extra money to you? For some people it apparently is, for me it isn't.

I'm comfortable with the tang mounted safety. My next accessory will be a light.

Stick with the Moss and forget the naysaying whiners. They just don't have the stones to own a Mossberg.

The operative word there is SELL.

Since you have the Mossberg, just upgrade the safety. My 590 would engage the safety if you racked it too hard... which really wasn't that hard. The metal safety fixed that. As for a light. I am a fan of the surefire foregrips. They are expensive but they are all self contained. No goofy wires and you can turn it on or off as needed.

You can get cheaper and decent shotguns a lot cheaper than the benelli. I love the benelli so they get my vote but a 1100 or a 930 are very good firearms and can be had at reasonable prices.

Surefire foregrip is cool, but there's no way I'm paying more for a foregrip than I did for the gun.

I doubt you would notice a big difference between the two anyway
