I believe dave's metal works products are only the approved as you stated, otherwise I would suggest carrier comp.

carrier comp products are considered as good as dave's, plus carrier comp and geissele triggers got together and are now selling a 922(R) Compliant US Made Hammer, which allows you to keep your factory stock a foregrip, if using an extended magazine.

carrier comp also sells a true M4 Picatinny Rail for it.

Have your buddy ask his LAPD instructors at Benelli school what they recommend.
Benelli ext mag, Dave Metal Works charging handle, Mesa Tactical shell carrier and sling. Everything else is nice but extra weight.

Carrier Comp products are considered better than DMW. CC does not make 2-shot extensions, only a full length 7-round tube. The CC tubes are titanium and DMW are steel - big difference.

The Mesa shell carrier and rail have caused problems on the M4 because the receiver is relatively thin aluminum and the screws tend to loosen and strip the holes.

IMO the best optics on an M4 is an Aimpoint T1 on a LaRue QD mount (the cost, however, will be half the price of the gun!). BTW, the Picatinny rail on the M4 is usually out of spec and must be changed. Carrier Comp makes a fully compliant rail.

Carrier Comp is not on the approved list, so no point in talking about it.
Recommend your buddy goes as light as possible.

If that is the LAPD approved list, it is not the current list.

Thanks for pointing that out, I will check with him.

If it were me, I would try to keep it light and simple.

Sights - I'd keep the Benelli Ghost Rings as I'm not really a fan of Aimpoints on a shotgun. But if he's going to do it, then go for a small light one as opposed to, say, the CompM4. And if he's going to do an Aimpoint or mount anything on the top rail, then he'll want to replace the rail itself. The Benelli M4 rail is a weak link on the gun and not to spec. Who knows why they did that but they did. There have been reports of folks having issues with keeping things attached. Carrier Comp makes a replacement as someone already suggested.

Extended Mag Tube - Dave's since he can't go with Carrier Comp

Light - Is the M80 the only mount option here? Seems like a lot of unnecessary weight to me for just a light. I'd use a simple, small and light tri rail mount on the mag tube (if possible) for the surefire light setup of his choice.

Stock - Pistol Grip...The adjustable one if it's approved

Side Saddle - Yes. Mesa 6 rounder

Charging Handle - Swap it out for an oversized one. Same with carrier release button but I didn't see that as an option below

Sling - I'd go with Vickers in that list

You are correct, I have posted an undated list.
