870 Reassembly Issue

Hey guys, my lady friend called me last night after she was cleaning her guns, she couldnt get her 870 back together properly. The bolt was in the receiver, but it was jammed somehow and the action was stuck as a result.

She brought it over, and Ive only worked with these once or twice at the academy, I got the foreend and bolt free, but for the life of my cannot get the thing back together properly.

I got it together to the point where it should work, but the action and bolt only rack about halfway (the top half, away from the receiver), and it gets stuck when you try and cycle it back.. Ideas? Im planning on pulling the trigger assembly tonight if no other ideas, but Im sure theres something Im overlooking

Did you push in the two bars the foreend slides on?

Yes, I did everything in the steps Ive learned, but it seems that there is something holding the back of the bolt from going further in.

The part in the video on that website where he presses the slide release and it just glides back is where Im stuck.. the slide release on hers is in already

I did, and I got it past that point, now its at the point where the slide release should take over, but the release button is up and the slide wont go any further back

Wow I appreciate the offer but I got it figured out. I just removed the trigger and started from scratch and it all went together seamlessly. Of course I told my friend that it took man skills etc.. Thanks guys

For my 870 I've had some of the same issues. The slide seems to get stuck and jam at about half way after the shell catch step. this has only happened on my 20g though. I was cleaning an older brand new 12g and it went back together seamlessly

If it makes you feel any better, I had the exact same issue the first (and only) time I took my new 870 apart. Got stuck at that same point. Just worked on those release mechanisms and eventually it went back together.

It sounds like an uncocked hammer is blocking the bolt and bolt carrier from moving all the way back. All you have to do in this situation is point the gun upwards, pull the forearm forward until you can see the hammer through the ejection port, flip the hammer back through the ejection port so it's not restricting movement and then rack the forearm all the way back.
