    VANG COMP 870 BARREL

I recently tried out my Vang Comp 12 guage barrel in my Remington 870. I used only 00 buckshot for testing at exactly 25 yards. What a pleasant surprise in grouping and accuracy! All of the rounds patterned in a nice tight group that would be covered by a 10" dinner plate. The majority of pellets were inside 6".

After going through about 30 rounds there were one or two pellets that were just outside 10" which I attributed to a dirty barrel. However, most pellets stayed inside 6" which amazed me. This grouping is perfect for law enforcement work, hunting or home defense applications.

Next, I intend to experiment at longer ranges. I want to figure out the full potential of this Vang Comp barrel. It is a vast improvement over the original barrel by far.

Different ammo will have differing results. Quality ammo will have fewer "fliers". I believe he recommends specific brands of ammo.

Was thinking of having this done to my 870 tactical, another good opinion!

So does Vang Comp rework your barrel or sell new ones?
I may be picking up a used 870 that needs a shorty installed. -g

He does sell used worked 870 barrels. Check his website to see what prices they are now.

Vang Comp'd guns are tacti-cool but are a mixed blessing.

One the beauties of a shotgun is that you have the expanding conical pattern working for you, allowing you to acquire and shoot a moving target quickly. As that pattern is constricted, effective range may increase but more precise shooting is required. With more and more precise shooting required, one has to start considering a defensive rifle as a reasonable alternative.

I am not saying don't go with Vang but realized you are making a trade-off . . . nothing comes for free.

Hi everyone. Long-time shotgunner from the "other" coast.

I prefer accurate patterning, rather than the "scattergun" approach. I want to know where every pellet is going, especailly in a HD scenario.

With respect to Vang Comp, ammunition technology has advanced to the point where some shells, such as Federal FliteControl or Hornady TAP, will actually pattern tighter through a plain barrel than any other shell through a Vang Comp treated barrel (but, FC and TAP will do worse through a Vang Comp!).

The truth is any decent 00 buck will produce a 2 1/2" - 3" hole at 7-yds. The key is, can the pattern be kept acceptably tight out to, say, 25-30-yds., if necessary? That's what the FC and TAP ammo offer and why, IMO, Vang Comp barrels have become somewhat obsolete. In addition, slugs through a VC barrel are slightly less accurate than if fired through a plain CYL barrel.

I have been using Federal LE132 00 and LE127 00 (full power) for a few years and am looking forward to the recently released LE132 1B (#1 buck, 15 pellets), which I feel is the perfect HD ammunition.

Interesting thread. I was thinking about sending my barrel to Vang Comp to have it re-worked. Watched Magpul's Art of the Dynamic Shotgun, and saw the patterning on stock barrels vs. Re-worked barrels.

I prefer a tighter group compared to the "spread." To me, the spread is a liability. Especially in an HD situation.
