You are throwing off the viewers as to what on earth you are trying to do. Firstly, ribbed sporting barrels were never intended to have a "heat shield" on them and trying to relieve one to fit will mean either cutting off the barrel rib or slitting the shield up the middle. The ultimate result will be fairly ugly and there is the obvious question of how to secure it.

On the question that plagues most "tactical" shotgun boards is why a heat shield is even needed? The military may call for them, but they are planning on having a weapon operate in a hot climate firing as many rounds as a trained soldier can shovel into the elevator in the minimum period of time. I suppose under those conditions the barrel "might" get hot enough to create the mirage effect the heat shield is meant to dissipate. if you aren't planning to fire many dozens of rounds per minute at a rate faster than you can probably keep the magazine topped up, I think it's safe to say the heatshield is dead weight that will do absolutely nothing for you.

If you are hell-bent on getting one for "the look" you need to obtain an unribbed barrel and obtain a heatshield that will fit it. The heatshields aren't that easy to find and more expensive than they really should be for a perforated bit of sheet metal pressed into the shape of the top of the barrel.

A heat shield on a vent rib barrel? If he gets it on there, please take a pic, as I want to see that.

The purpose of a heatshield on a shotgun is the same as that of a handguard on a rifle: to protect the hand from the barrel when using the bayonet.

This is why you see them on Mossberg 590s (which include a bayonet lug) but almost nothing else.

I've seen Mossberg 590A1 promo deals with the M9 bayonet. I'll withhold further comment on bayo equipped shotguns in the hands of a civi out of respect for the OP.
