I'm going to take a shotgun class soon.. I own several handguns and know what to do with them..but learning shotguns...

What's a good balance between HD and sport (skeet, trap, shot)?

On other words, what's the best all around shotgun for a newbie shotgun owner??? (but not a newbie handgun guy??)

There's a shotgun sub forum where this question is asked all the time. That being said - the standard shotguns would be a Remington 870, Mossberg 500 or Mossberg 590(a1 is the mil spec version).

Get a good clays gun like a Beretta 391. It will keep its value and you can put 10,000 rounds a year through it with no problems. If you get a short barelled long mag tube tacticool HD gun it will sit in your closet waiting for someone to come for you, which is 99.9% unlikely to happen to most people on this board.

Agree with 870 if you want a mix. You can hunt with it, shoot clays, and swap the barrel for a HD set up. I shoot a pump for fun, auto for competition. If you reload, get an OU or enjoy chasing you hulls everywhere. If you can wait until June and are in SoCal, go to the shooting sports fair at raahagues and try out several for fit.

If you are on a budget, you can check out the Beretta 3901. It is a semi-auto similar to the 391 that Joe mentioned above. It is based on the Beretta 390 which is the predecessor to the 391. They are around $599.00 where the 391 is a bit more expensive, if you can find one.

Also note, Beretta is discontinuing the 391 because of the new A400 model which is really pricey.

Big 5 has the Mossberg 500 with two barrels package. Short barrle for HD, lobger barrel for clays/hunting. Swap barrels by hand in under a minute.

Yea I've seen the Big 5 Moss 500 for under $300...
I've seen the Rem 1100 but they are $$$ new..

Guess I'm looking into a semi auto for now and then collect some O/U and pumps later on......
