    question on shotgun laws

I just bought a mossberg 930 spx and want to put a pistol grip and angled foregrip on it. Is this legal to have both? Also if I put a pistol grip can you only load 5 shells? I overheard someone saying that at turners.
    Thanks!

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Short version is yes your configuration is legal with a fixed stock. pistol grip and foregrip are ok with that.

No, you can load more than 5 shells... but I don't know the max...I'm sure someone else will chime in on that.

Yes it is legal to have AFG and PG as long as you do not have folding/telescoping stock. The maximum amount of ammo you can load in your gun depends on the magazine capacity. If the mag tube holds 5 shells, you can only load 5 shells. If it holds 7 you can only load 7. In other words no restrictions on capacity except for ca's Hi cap ban, which it's pretty hard to get a +10 rd mag tube for a shotgun even if it weren't illegal.

The magazine capacity on shotguns is generally a DFG/hunting regulation limiting capacity to "x" rounds when hunting "x" game.
AFAIK, California's only restriction is 3 or 5 rounds for waterfowl, but other states have other restrictions.

What Turner's may have been thinking of is 922(r) compliance, which is only an issue if the rifle has more than 10 imported parts, and I seem to recall there being another qualifier related to it's configuration being banned in some form (but I may be off base there).

Main thing is that an autoloader may not have BOTH a pistol grip AND a folding/telescoping buttstock.

I hate it whenever someone brings up 922r, it is so freaking confusing and ridiculous... yet I try to read it to understand every time it is brought up... generally it is also around midnight when it comes up

As I understand 922r though, it is only for imported guns listed in 925(3)(d) so following that logic a 930 shouldn't have any 922r issues.

Oh well, I'll do some Christmas morning research later and try to understand the illogical dreck of our fine legislators

Ya... Normally I wouldn't have even thought of 922(r), but since he mentioned that the Turner's guys mentioned a 5rd restriction...
