Finding a proper (used?) trap shotgun for mom

    Hey folks,

So I am interested in buying my mom a shotgun for Trap and sporting clays purposes. And I guess an added benefit is "accidentally" giving her a home-defense tool hahaha

Anyway, she's shot a few clays before, but has always had issues with the weight of the gun, and with recoil--even with a youth-sized Beretta 20ga autoloader of some sort (go figure). My 1930 Belgian Auto-5 12ga would be decidedly too heavy, and I don't know that she can work a pump often and have fun haha.

    SO

Anyone here have any advice as to what kind of shotgun I might look at for her?
I was thinking a small 20ga semi-auto, but perhaps you guys have different ideas.

And on that topic, I would also be particularly happy if there are any particular models that might fit the bill, that are either C&R, or if not C&R, are the kind of thing I might readily find used for not horribly much money.

Maybe a Sweet 16 or an AL48 or something...I really have no idea.

    Thanks!
This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it.

How much do you want to spend? A curio or relic which would be over 50 years old would most likely not come with removable choke tubes. If you wanted to do sporting clays and trap you would need to be able to change chokes to allow some versatility. Maybe you could find a c&r that had a bunch of different choked barrels with the gun. Im thinking a rem 1100 that would run 4-5 hundred used.

Hmm yeah i'd forgotten about that, my A5 has a polychoke so I tend to forget that those older shotguns were choke-barrel and not screw-in.

$400 sounds about right, and I do remember that the 1100s I have fired seemed to have light recoil. I will consider it!

Go to the private party sales on this forum and you will see a 11-87 for 440.00 in bakersfield.

          ><

Here is a link with some useful info.

Also, an hour with your local clays instructor focusing on gun mount, stance and shotgun fit and will go a long way to manage felt recoil and felt weight.

            Only my opinion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

            1. Don't mix Trap and Skeet guns with a Home Defense shotgun.

            2.Semi Auto to start.

            3. PROPER GUN FIT IS EVERYTHING, I recommend Stock Fitter's Bible by Roland Oswald.

4 Rent and shoulder as many shotguns as possible, before you decide.

            5. Believe # 3, you will not regret it.

            6. Most gun salsemen don't no beans about proper fit and thats the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!
