    .410 pump question...

I have been looking for a cheap .410 pump, only one i've seen thus far is the Mossberg 500. Anybody know of something I missed? Don't worry, it's for hunting. Don't want to open up that can of worms.
Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.

You might be able to find a used Browning 42 floating around. The Grade 1s are around $700 - $900 from what I remember. They are 26" full choked guns made by Miroku. Another one is a Browning BPS and they are around $600 new iirc, made by Miroku. The 3rd is a late model used Winchester 42 $7-900, again made by Miroku. All are very solid shotguns. The 42s are patterned after the old Winchester 42, a longtime favorite of many shotgunners.

    Good Luck!!

Swmbo's dowry included an early model 42, she kills lots of birds with it.

Compared to the Mossberg, there's no comparison whatsoever, other than caliber.

If I were seriously considering a .410 as a hunting gun, I'd get a 42. As an alternative, any of the guns bjl33 mentions above would be awesome. If I wanted a gun for camping and screwing around with, it would be the Mossberg. Consider it semi-able for hunting, but you'd have to try both to see the improvement in balance and handling you get if you choose a non-Mossberg.

Pay a lot of attention to having your new gun correctly fitted to you. This takes a specialist, not normally the guy behind the counter selling the gun (especially at Big-5 or Turners).

Bird hunting with a .410 or 28 gauge is a blast (pun not intended).

      bjl333's post is spot-on.

I've got an 870 that does just fine. When I was in the market, I asked my dad, who shoots A LOT of trap, and he said that 500s were hit or miss. Many of them just aren't reliable and others are 100% reliable. So, instead of taking chances, I found a barely used 870 for $250.

Keep watching Gunbroker. I scored a brand new Mossberg 500 for $200. For some reason, finding .410 pumps is pretty difficult.
