Informational. I had not heard of Vang Comp before I saw one. Thought others would like to know of Vang Comp if they hadn't either.

Actually, the one I saw is for sale and I am thinking about it. Thought someone would chime in if they had one or had shot one.

      Hope this explains the OP.

          Thanks for the comments.

Were the results of patterns with the Vang Comp better/tighter?

I found a brand new one that was won at a shooting competition as a prize. Comes with the two shot extension and is about $200 off retail. I'm seriously thinking of buying it.

I've shot three different shotguns that had the Vang Comp treatment. They definitely shot tighter patterns than unmodified shotguns. Damn things are really nice. The back boring helps a great deal with recoil. More than you'd expect.

I have come to the conclusion that Vang style of backboring will make a pattern tighter..even the buffered "flight control wad" type of loads from federal. but only a little bit. If you want that, then the VC SG is the best you can get.

The other route is to get a $450 police model with a a couple sleeves of federal p/n 00-132 00buckshot (flight control wad) that holds a real tight group. this will print patterns about 1/2 to 1 inch wider than the Vang custom with the same ammo (at longer ranges 15yds +). It's still an IC choke, it's not quite like the untamed cyl bores of the regular 870HD commercial model. Then again, you can argue that a wide dispesion is useful in a short gun. A cyl bore behaves well with the specialty buckshot which forces the tighter group-more versaltile perhaps.

At anyrate, I have 4 870's -each with a little bit different setup. (all acquired for less than the VC gun you linked to).

We shot one in a side match at the Steel Challenge shooting Winchester double A's. They shoot a really tight pattern at 20 yards, almost like shooting a rifle. The guns seem to be set up for shooting slugs or 00.

I friend of mine was 2nd in that side match and won one. I think he's selling it.

The Vang Comp really works, but back-boring shotgun barrels goes back a ways. I remember Bill Holmes was back boring barrels for the trap guns 30 years ago.

I had researched this topic a bit and finally decided that paying a 'barrel-smith' $75 to thread my 870 express for a screw in choke was the best choice.

Some will state that they don't always like the way back-boring will affect buckshot patterns. birdshot is a different story, but the one thing I notice is how perfect a bbl is determines the little nuances of how they pattern. $2000 shotguns always seem to pattern well, even with walmart target loads. benelli cryo hardeneding is also another example of a well made tube.

I have two of the same vintage of fixed choke 30" wingmaster barrel and they both feel a little different. One likes 7.5's and the other really spreads 8's nicely. Shotgun tech is a lot like herding cats. patterning is a bit of smoke and mirrors...a black art.

That's probably the one I am looking at buying if it is on the east side of the SF Bay.

If you do a search here you will find my other comments about Hans Vang. It goes along with everyone els. He is a great guy. I stay with him while I am at gunsite. First met him at a TREXPO in 96 and been shooting his stuff ever since. It is good to see his name starting to get the credit it has been due. His shotgun barrel work is WAY more than just backboring.

I bought it today. Will pick it up after the 10-day wait. Pics will follow when I get it in my hands.
