Rem 870 vs. Benelli Super Nova Tactical

Looking for a good HD shotgun.

The thing that concerns me the most about the 870 is rust issues. They come out of the factory rusting.

I don't have any real concerns of the Benelli. I know they make great shotguns. I don't know how the Super Nova Tactical rates. All the reviews I have read about the Benelli are very positive. I know it only holds 5 rounds out of the box. But there is a mag tube extender. Also the Benelli is more versatile being able to different length rounds. Plus it has a mag tube block feature that allows you to eject the round in the chamber but not load from the mag tube.

    Anyone have experience with both?

And while we are on HD shotguns, what is your experience with the Winchester PDX1 shotgun round?

870's may have a litle surface rust when you get it, but in my experience, you can pretty much just wipe it off with oil. Everytime I am done using the gun, I spray some oil onto a rag, give it a good rub down, and I have never had a problem. Just oil it, and it is practically a non-issue.

I've used both, and would agree the topical rust on the 870's isn't a big deal. However I prefer the Benelli for all the reasons you list plus one more. It has been my experience that the ejection port on the 870 is smaller than the Benelli's and I have had a few instances of the shells hanging up ever so slightly. I have never had that happen on a Benelli. Both good guns, but I believe the Benelli is better.

I have a benelli nova (not the super nova) as well as a couple 870s.

I prefer the 870 because it just feels better in my hands than the benelli...

the super nova is going to handle 3 1/2" shells where the 870 is a 3" gun unless you get the super magnum. For most things you are not going to have to be using 3.5" shells. The standard 2.75" and 3" shells should be fine for your needs. It is my opinion that if you are going to regularly be using 3.5" rounds, you need to have a 10ga

that mag tube block is interesting, but cant say i have really ever needed it

the benelli is a nice gun for sure, but so is the 870 IMHO. my suggestion would be to simply buy based on which one feels better in your own hands

The 870 is the standard of the industry---I have zero rust problems with my 870 (or all other guns) because I wipe them down with Breakfree CLP---no rust!

I've got both the 870 (my HD weapon) and the SuperNova (28" though). They are both EXCELLENT guns. I love shooting both of them, but here is my take:

If you are going to stick with the "standard" HD modifications/upgrades, then I recommend the Benelli; i.e., side saddle, light/mount, mag extension, etc. But if you want to go all out and get kinda crazy with it, then 870 is probably your better option; it is obvious that the aftermarket support is a lot stronger for the Remington 870. You can pretty much put everything on that gun, with the exception of the kitchen sink.

But like I said, if you want to stay pretty basic, then I would go Benelli hands down. IMO, it's a better looking gun, and upkeep on it is just so much simpler. The gun comes apart so easily and you can remove the trigger group for cleaning without any fuss. It does have other perks to it too, like the ability to manually feed a round without popping one out of the magazine, the locking bolt, etc.

Things I would change about the Benelli, though, include the trigger (feels really weird compared to the 870) and the grip area on the stock. Other than that, it's awesome.

870, no complaints really. But I do find it noteworthy to mention that the lining in my barrel has kind of deteriorated. LAME!

Go and shoot both and see what you think. If you can't do that at least hold both of them at the store. There will be a difference and you will prefer one over the other just doing that.
