what ammo to use for mossberg 500

Hi, i am new on this site.

So got a question for the experienced shotgun owners. I just bought a Mossberg 500 combo, 20" and 28" barrel 6shot. my first shotgun.

My question for everyone is, what is the best ammo (size, number) to use for home defense. what would be good ammo (size or type) to purchase to go to the shooting range, for both barrels 20" and 28".

is there any type, the mossberg will not fit, or will get jammed with. Type of ammo that will damage the barrel or the choke.

is there any kind i shouldnt use, they might get stuck. i know the mossberg will handle 2-3/4 - 3"...

but what i really would like to know is, which is better to use or preferred to use, for home defense, Buckshot or Birdshot, and also at the range is is more recommended.

Either buck or bird. They'll both stop an intruder for HD purposes. The 500 should eat anything you put in it, so long as it is the proper size shell.

I shoot cheap ammo for fun, but use LE type ammo for defense.

Buck for HD and bird for the range. Cheap on the bird shot and slurge the $5 for the 00 buckshot. That pump will eat anything that's 23/4" or 3". Cheers my friend!

I keep 5 buck shot and one slug all 2 3/4" for home defense with my 18.5" barrel. I like the idea of 9 .32 caliber hunks of lead being shot at once. The cheap walmart stuff has worked every time in my shotgun but it probably wouldn't hurt to fork down a few extra bucks for a nicer brand for home defense. As for the field barrel it depends on the game you hunt our what you shoot.. Dove/quail/clays any 7, 7 1/2 or 8 shot should work in 2 3/4". Duck and goose you'll want to step it up to bb, no 2 or no 4 shot and possibly the 3"

Read everything you can get your paws on about shotguns and shells, buy different rounds and see what they do, and make your choice. It might take a while, but it's FUN!

I have a 500 that I've put more than 3K rounds of just about everything you can think of (2" mini, 2 3/4", and 3") - bird,buck,slugs,bean bag, and rubber. I've NEVER had a failure to feed/fire or jam. I usually do a complete dissasembly and cleaning every 500 -600 rounds.

For home defense - I like Federal personal defense 9 pellet 00 buck. I personally shoot this really well due to the low recoil
