Transporting a Shotgun in your vehicle

Is it possible to transport a shotgun with ammo in the same compartment? For example, keeping an unloaded single-barrel break-open shotgun in a locked trunk with ammo on buttstock ammo carrier. Or does the ammo need to be in the passenger area separate from the shotgun? Thanks

You don't need to separate the ammo, the gun just cannot be loaded.

What you want to do is legal, I would be on the safe side and remove the shells from the carrier, as some cops like to play hardball just because they can.

"In a position in which it can be fired" means loaded.

Ammunition may be kept in the same container or trunk, but the handgun must remain unloaded with no rounds in the cylinder and no loaded magazines in the magazine well.

better to keep them both locked and out of site.. who knows what excuses a cop could make seeing the ammo in the passenger compartment, then search your truck, bascilly making your life miserable, especially if they ask to search your car after seeing the ammo, and you saying no..

there was some law, cant find the reference that stated if its in a shell carrier attached to the shotgun, its not loaded, which is what the DA's argument, since a few of the shotguns on the market have built in shell carriers.

case law is pretty firm on the definition of loaded.

Regardless, never consent to a search of your vehicle.

^^^ what? and ya, if theyre both locked in the trunk and the shotgun isnt loaded, youre fine. and like it was said, never consent to a search, and never have anything in plain view than can lead to a search. its just not worth the headache
