    whats better for the money?

A good used 870 tactical recon for $400 or
    A new 870 police for $500

I'm not an expert on 870's, but I'd say the the Desert Recon (I'm assuming it's desert) is better value if you really like the camo or the colored receiver and barrel, since getting those coated is rather expensive.

However, if you don't plan on coating it in a different color, or prefer black, I'd say the new 870 Police. Practically, you probably won't need the extra durability of the police, but if you're willing to pay for it, I say go for it.

Another option would be to buy a new or used Express with similar featrues as the Police, and take the money that would be spent on the extra durability and put it into ammo or a class.

870P has beefier parts so if it's going to get alot of use the extra $100 is a good investment.

If it's an actual P model new in box for $500, that's a buy.

The minor differences in a couple of internal parts between a P model and the millions and millions of other 870s out there have been beaten to death here and on other forums more than anything except the 'Mossberg vs. Remington' question, so it's not worth rehashing. The difference are, just that, minor and somewhat mythological, IMO. Suffice to say the cachet of "extra durability", factory parkerizing and isolated production line are what make the P model cost more.

Make your decision on which gun best suits your needs, desires and budget. They are their core the exact same gun, just with different cosmetic features.

            $500.00 is a low price for a new 870P.

Yes N.I.B, If I choose this 870p It will be my 4th rifle thru the local gun store. For the Thanksgiving weekend he told me he could give it to me for $499. I figured that was a better deal than the used 870 tactical recon that Im also looking at.

You can always play dressup with your 870 later but get the police version imho. The stock on the tactical is most likely a crappy one at that.
