Noob question on the 870 (again)

Hi all so I did recieve my 870 Tuesday this week, and although I have used one before I'm still trying to know the gun in and out. Now my questions are these (I'll be concise)

*Is it alright to hold down the action bar while moving the forend FORWARDS
And
*the "flap", when pushed up while the forend is racked back goes up stays there until moving the forend forward. Is this normal and if so what's the purpose of this function?

1) It's fine.

2) It's normal. When there is ammo that flap holds the shell and lets it line up so it can feed into the chamber. Then it gets the heck out of the way and gets ready to feed another shell.
