I have heard of some shooters running them out to 1600 rounds before issues started.
I have run 400 rounds of bird shot between cleanings, but mine is a Salient M2 and to be honest with what it cost me and being my 3 gun competition shotgun I want it to run with out problems. So far it has be flawless. It is a dream to clean. I takes me about 20 minutes to clean it completely, bolt and firing pin out and trigger group out and clean.
Much easier and faster to clean than my Remington 1100.If you can't shoot good, at least look good shootingComment

The most common answer is still the best: "Every time you take it to the range or the field and shoot it, clean it when you're done!"
There is no generality for how often to clean - too many variables. The shotshells you use might have a dirtier propellent, the magazine may have mud or water in it that will cause rust, the bore may be streaked by the soft unplated shot, the bolt face may look like a fry cook just burned breakfast on it. In any shotgun the carbon buildup will cause feed or extraction failures with increasing frequency, gas guns in particular.
Pumps are quite a bit more tolerant of propellent residue from the shells and from the dirt, dust, mud and crud. To avoid issues before they start, apply the simple rule above and you'll be fine - "clean it after you shoot it!"
