Out of a probably-misguided desire to be able to use my HD shotgun, a 590, for sporting clays, I replaced the 20" barrel with ramp sight with a 24" barrel with a bead. As a result, of course, I could probably aim well for clays, but was concerned about home defense use. Plus, I was wondering if maybe a red dot sight would give me more visibility around the point of aim and make it easier to hit the clays.
Because I'm cheap, and because I wasn't sure how well this would work, I got a $29.95 Amazon special -- the http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002ZVFF20
Installed it on my 590, found that I needed to raise the stock to get a good cheek weld, got the Knoxx with a comb raiser. Yesterday, I went to the indoor range to zero the sight. Today, went with three people who'd never shot a shotgun (or, in fact, any rifle) to do sporting clays. The outing was a wild success, but about half way through, my girlfriend complains she can't see the red dot anymore.
I assume, of course, that she's doing something wrong, or that maybe it's because of the rain, so I ask her to try to change her cheek weld a few times, and ... nothing works for her.
Finally, I decide to look through the sight and ... I don't see anything either. Damn. Someone else with us points out it looks like the glass is actually half out of its frame. We pop it in and it works fine.
And then three shots later? The glass pops out completely, flying out about as far as the spent shotgun shell.
And this is why you don't spend $29.95 on your sight.
(We switched to a range O/U, and the people I was with liked it much more than my 590, so all's well that ends well. But I really do like the red dot aiming, and -- now that I know that -- will replace this sight with something a little more high quality. Maybe even spend $50 this time. Kidding, kidding
