    Skeet Shooting

Went skeet shooting today and love it!!!

Thinking of getting a shotgun for it. I used an over and under today. Browning.

What is a good one? Browning or Beretta? Looking for something cheap. $800-1000. Don't want to spend too much since I'm only starting out.

Or should I get a semi-auto, that way I can use it as HD gun as well?

    Thanks.

    I was in same boat.

I was torn between Rem 1100 and over/under.

But I just love the feel of Over/Under. I researched for about 1 month and just order Lanber 2097 from CDNN.

I can only shoot once a month due to work schedule and family. I couldn't justify spending $1500+ for Citori and didn't want used gun for $1000+.
Did a lot of research and I kept coming back to lanber 2097 for cost and quality.

Do your own research but for the money Lanber 2097 seems to be hard to beat.
Got mine for $650 from CDNN.

      Shotgun choices for Skeet

You'll probably have seen every type of shotgun used. Currently the O/U are used by many or most of the advanced shooters. Browning Citori is good OV and there are several shown in the sporting section of their website. Beretta has several that seem to be great guns. Unfortunately at your price range you'll be looking for a used O/U for around $700 - $1000. A new Beretta White Onyx runs $1,500, and their other O/U's are considerably higher.

The good news is both companies have been making good semi-autos for years and you can pick up one of those from $500 up. Don't overlook the Remington 1100 semi which was the gun twenty years ago and still is one of the most popular guns for skeet ever. Prices new start around $1000 and used at around $500 with many in very good condition starting around $600. Check gunbroker.com and other auction sites.

I'm still using a Remington Wingmaster which is almost identical to the gun I started hunting with 40 years ago. After looking for about a year I'll probably go with the 1100 because I can use it as a field gun as well. I'd really love to have Beretta Golds, and I really liked shooting the Citoris too.

As for HD, most go with a shorter barrel 24" or shorter, while the majority of Skeet guns are 26" or longer. I don't think you'll remain happy if you try to serve both purposes with the same gun.

I don't know where you live, but if its anywhere near SoCal go to one of Jordan's (bjl333) Skeet Clinics with Coach Don Zimmer - they are absolutely awesome. Check out Jordan's Clinic posts and more on the Shotguns forum for great advice. For Home Defense there are also many posts on this board concerning gun recommendations and tactics; be sure to check JD McGuire's (aippi)information here and at his website: www.aiptactical.com

I too am a noob. After a huge amount of research (primarily from online users) and agonizing, I finally settled on a Citori Satin Hunter which I found at BassPro for $1,349. After purchasing it I found an already expired rebate on the Browning site and info that Cabela's had recently feen selling them for $1,099(no Cabelas in California). Oh well, my luck; a day late and a dollar short.

It appears that the Lanber 2097 is fairly close in price and my understanding is that the Citori holds its value better and everyone has advised me that either the Citori or Beretta is the way to go. I was looking at a much less expensive gun, also, but after trying them all out found a huge difference in the way they fit me, guess everyone knew what they were talking about. Additionally, when I went to purchase one, the gentleman at the store, really knew what he was talking about, took a couple of hours and showed me the ins and outs of serveral models. His recommendation was to get the base Citori, which felt the best to me and whose inerds were the same as the more expensive Citori's and take a little of the savings and have it properly fit to me. This advice certainly sounds good to me.

Although, I can not speak from a lot of experience, I'd recommend taking your time and trying them all out.

The skeet clinic that Jordon organizes will give you a lot of information on how the sport is done correctly. I went to the one yesterday and it was a wealth of information.

I don't know about the Lanber but I'm pretty sure any Cintori will cost you at least $1,000. But they are worth it.

Whatever gun you get, the choke is very important. You want a very open choke for skeet because it is so close. You really don't want to shoot a modified or narrower. If you get a new gun then I guess most will have choke tubes, but a used gun may be a fixed choke.

+1 on BJL333's skeet clinic with Coach Don.

Check the Gun Library section on the Cabella's site. There are several nice used Browning Citoris listed in great condition. You can buy one for around $1000 (no tax to Calif.) and have an excellent O/U that not only will outlast you, but always have a good market for resale. Make sure you look for one with choke tubes instead of fixed chokes so you can shoot skeet, trap and even hunt with it. My club shoots weekly and many members have Beretta, Caesar Guerinis, even some Perratzis, but 75% of the regulars shoot Brownings. Great guns, great traditions.
