    My new HD scatter gun.

Well, after preaching over and over for years that one of the guns everyone should own is an 870, I finally went out and practiced what I preached. Taught my wife to function it, going out to practice a bit with her soon. Loaded up with Fiocchi 2 3/4" 00 buck shells with 6 in the tube but nothing chambered. Action is decent, but I'm gonna do a little smoothing out of the bolt, action in general, and just a bit of fluff and buff. All black of course, but may change it out to wingmaster furniture someday. I have an ATI top folding stock I may play with or may sell but I've had it a long time with all the attachments to go with it. Only thing I'm going to add to this one is a recoil pad, and a shell holder on the stock which is also black. Those are ordered and on the way.

Just your basic extended tube 870 Express. Only thing I'm not liking is the cheesy little sling loop on the buttstock. I would rather have a true sling stud but I guess that's all they come with now. Here's a link to remington to the original gun: http://remington.com/products/firear...c-7-round.aspx

    Nice pick up.

Need to make the switch from my Moss 500.

Yeah, mine was around $266 all said and done. It was $449 regular price, $349 on sale, $15 percent off, and a $30 mail in from remington. Given I had to pay tax on the full $349 of course and DROS but thats the way it goes here. I was going to put on my ATI foldover stock, but I'm just going to keep the regular old plastic full size stock I think.

And you got yours for a KILLER deal by the way.

Loaded it with 4 shots of 00 buck followed by the last two of some 1 1/4 oz. slugs.

Hopefully that oughta do the trick!

when you keep it in the house consider keeping it loaded up with some low recoil 00

I thought about that, but I put in full 2 3/4" 9 pellet 00 buckshot and talked to the wife about it. I love my wife, She said "If my life comes down to it, I don't care if my shoulder hurts a little bit afterward."

Only reason I'd get the low recoil is for follow up shots and potentially not going through as many walls and hitting a neighbor. I'm looking around for some and next time I buy ammo, I'll probably get some low recoil 00 buck, or 000 buck.

I love my 500, but ill be making the switch to a 590 when the time comes. My 500 has a pistol grip, but I would get the 590 with a traditional stock.

I do like the 870 with the hogue acessories, feels good but my brothers 870 has had a lot of issues with low brass bird shot... its left me a little uneasy about getting an 870 for myself.

So what have people done for that cheap sling swivel in the rear on the new 870's? I really don't like it but I guess if thats all I have to use, it'll do the trick.

All said and done, I think its worth it to get it at big5 than Buds, and I typically ALWAYS go to buds. For this one, it was originally $449, they had it on sale for $349 which is what I paid tax on, they took 15% off, and and Remington is running a $30 off coupon. It was about $350 out the door but I still have to put my $30 rebate in which will bring it to a grand total of about $320 for the 7+1 extended tube 870.

This is the same one from buds: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/p...ducts_id/95077

So you'll pay $333 plus whatever your transfer fee is and depending on whether your deal collects tax, that too. I think Big5 is the way to go. I LOVE it, the action is a little rough but I've been lubing it, cleaned it all up, took it all apart and cleaned it and worked the action about a few hundred times now and its smoothing out. My father-in-law is the president of the trap club so I may give it to him for a couple weeks to really smooth it out as he's done it a thousand times now (exaggerating of course) but many to say the least. I think its a great deal for the money and I'm glad I went with Remington instead of Mossberg. I've owned a Maverick 88 and a Mossberg 500 and the Remington just feels better to me all around. More aftermarket but not by a huge margin. I'm going to put wood stock and fore grip on it and probably wingmaster if I can find some good furniture, a recoil pad, and a mercury recoil reducer to help out the thing being less of a bruiser. All in all, for a few bucks extra it'll be a perfect riot gun. I may someday add a plus 2 tube and make it a 9 shot where the mag tube extends just a bit out further than the barrel but for now it's doing its job just fine.

The top folding stocks aren't often as useful as you might think. The fixed stock is always ready, stable and can make for a bludgeon if the need arises, they are also consistently cheaper.

Smoothing out the action will happen progressively at somewhere between 200-400 shells worth of shooting. You can smooth the rough spots in the chamber with medium to fine cut polishing compounds bought at an automotive store with a bore mop and a electric drill (obviously, after stripping the weapon and removing the barrel). Cycling snap caps will help with smoothing things out and can be done at home safely, along with practicing load/unload and rapid reload drills.

The sling loops are an easy fix. Peruse your favorite online gunstore looking for sling loop options, you'll be surprised how many options there are in that space. Wood screws can be used on plastic stocks, but I prefer to push some epoxy into the hole before I screw it in, particularly with thinner walled polymer stocks.

                              Good luck,
