870 or 887?

Guys im looking for a little input. I dont have a shot gun and been looking for a little while now. Im more of a pistol guy and have an AR, but everyone has to have a shot gun right? What id like to do with it is the 3 gun match, a little skeet shooting with my buddys, and home defense. My 2 options i have been looking at are the Remi 870 or the 887 tactical. The Tactical version is nice cause it has the assy rail, sights, and has adjustable chokes so i can do some skeet shooting as well as HD....The 870 is pretty plain jane, but a proven gun from what i hear. I would buy one with a long barrel and then buy a short barrel for HD. Whats your opinions??

The 887 looks to be an 870 chambered for up to 3-1/2" magnum loads.

I recently added an 870 into the collection, nice gun a few hundred rounds and seems to be smoothing out. Damn thing can't break clays though.... Well ok that part is all me. The 870 also has the ability to change chokes.

There is a user here goes by aippi whom is really knowledgable about these. He is a remington armorer I believe.

Iv got me a plain jane Remi 870 and personally, I like the simple look when it comes to a shot gun. I use it for HD, camping and clay bird shooting..awesome. performs great. The 887, unfortunately, never tried, but man that shotgun looks crazy cool. I think you will be happy with either choice. Just my two cents.

i have a 870 with the 3.5" chamber, the 887 looks like a newer fancier 870...

The 887 looks to be just a dressed up 870 in plastic (think benelli) as they intended to make the gun impervious to environments (i.e. hunting, march , etc.)

If I were you , think of the following 1) do you need 3.5" rounds? if so then you can , like jhkutterer has , consider the super mag version of the 870 as well and #2 will you be hunting? if so then the 887 is a good choice... but imho I'd say go with the 870. There are so many accessories and customization you can do on your 870 , versus the 887, there isn't much out there except maybe barrels, but otherwise, it'll be hard to find tactical accessories for it.

Also , the 870 comes with rails, etc. so also think about that!

887 and 870 are different guns. 887 has a rotating bolt, for one thing.

Agreed, 870 Tactical is a good gun. I 've had a couple come through SG classes and they worked flawlessly and sight adjustments for a 50 yard zero was un-neccessary.
I don't like any SG forend that covers the loading port when pulled back. Complicates the unloading process and makes a "magazine check" a pain with the action open.

I went through the same delimma, 887 or 870, a few months ago. Then I asked a guy who worked for Remington which one if he had one choice- his answer was 870 always. 870 is legendary and I'm glad I got mine 870, couldn't be happier.

Unless it's going to be strictly a waterfowl gun, 870, hands down, every single time. If it is going to be strictly a waterfowl gun, 50/50. Personally, I'd still take an 870, but you wouldn't be out of line picking up an 887. For a home defense gun, or looking at the "tactical" models, the 870 is the better overall design and will give you fewer problems.

The 887 has had some moderately negative reviews and the one example I handled / shot didn't really thrill me. Encasing the gun in polymer seems to serve no other purpose than encasing the gun in polymer. There've been reports of rusting barrels under that plastic.

For an entry level gun that you can use across a variety of purposes, it's hard to argue with a properly broken 870. As a beginning competitor I'd not feel out of place shooting a match with one, nor would I feel out of place on the trap field or in a farm field kicking up game birds with the proper barrel.

All just my opinion, take it in the spirit it's given.
