    Bill Jeans: Emergency Reload

An interesting take on loading through the ejection port.

It's an excerpt from this DVD...

Works on many guns, but it should be considered an emergency procedure.

On most handguns, as well as some long guns, regular use of this method can damage the extractor as it is forced up and over the rim... or on some guns it may hang and prevent the bolt from going into battery.

I have short stroked my 870 a couple of times during rapid shooting as much as I love that a good pump because it will cycle any ammo this is one of the reasons I love my Benelli M4 or any semi auto for that matter. Weather your choosing a pump or a semi auto you do give up something with either action a bolt hold open is one of the reasons I choose a semi auto.

What????????? Don't combat load because you may be to stupid to cycle your weapon correctly??????????????? He is showing idiots why they should not combat load.

Rack a pump shotgun with authority at all times and issues like this do not occur. They are operator issues and not design issues of pump shotguns.

He is not saying don't combat load and to his credit he states "Your choise"

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

If somebody is short stroking their shotgun they are going to induce a malfunction anyway.

Thats why you should look in the port before you do an emergency reload...

Can't say I've ever short stroked a pump shotgun in the ~9 years I've been shooting them. I've seen newbie shooters do it when they were too timid to work the gun's action aggressively enough, but I personally have never done it.

I'm not implying that what Mr. Jeans is saying is not useful information, but I don't think it applies to the 99% of pump shotgun owners who know how to work their gun correctly.

Short stroking can happen to anyone if your shooting really fast I'm not a timid type that you describe and I have done it maybe twice but have never had a double feed that he's talking about.

Oh don't get me wrong, I wasn't saying that anybody that does it is timid, I'm just saying that in my experience, the people I witnessed short stroking the gun were timid about working the action.

Oddly enough, the only time I'd ever seen a double feed on a bolt gun it was the same issue. A young lady was firing my Mosin Nagant for the first time, and wouldn't pull the bolt back hard enough to eject the casing. Same idea. I'm just saying that if a person is timid about working the action, a double feed is more likely to happen.

The double feed he describes happens only if you shortstroke it, think its empty, then try and load through the ejection port.

His point is valid. Unless you practice emergency reloads enough to become accustomed to the feel of the round you're loading as it drops away from your fingers into the ejection port, you could certainly set up this malfunction. If the round doesn't drop away from your fingers as you guide it into the port, there's a problem. I have to say that I can't remember the last time I saw it happen, and I've trained with and trained others with shotguns for a considerable period.

Being left handed, I cheat - I can see into the port without lowering the shotgun when I'm emergency loading. It wouldn't be hard for me to see if I had managed to induce the malfunction shown in the video. You deprived right handers have to do it by feel.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

Us deprived right handers can also rotate the weapon 90 degrees counterclockwise, stare in the port, and port load "over the top" letting gravity put the round into the upturned port. Still got to make sure the brass end is closest to you though
