I have a scabbard molle-strapped diagonally on the back of one of my vests. I like it for that (makes for an easy, behind the back draw,) but I wouldn't transport it like that openly. I wouldn't worry about people at the range freaking out, I'd worry about anyone else seeing you transport it. You can get full, soft cases really cheap, so maybe get one of those for transport and get the scabbard for home storage and/or bugout situations. They usually come with a shoulder strap for easy grab-n-go action.

Why would you get the scabbard for self defense? You cannot use the shotgun while it is in the scabbard. If you want a way to carry a long arm for self defense a sling is the only way to really go.

Covering/casing/scabbarding/locking a long arm is not required by law. You could carry it on your shoulder, or on a sling on your back, and you're fine. Nobody at the range is gonna care for sure. The only consideration is, do you care about possibly freaking out an undeducated, anti-gun neighbor? If YES, then case out of respect for neighborly relations. But you're not required to do so.

Why? Again, this is not required by law. As long as the long gun is not loaded, you're fine for transport.

To Tyrist, the reason for the scabbard is to cover up the shotgun which will be under my bed. I guess protect it from dust, bugs and from scratches. I figure it will be easier to pull it out from the scabbard vs plastic case or nylon zipper case. Kinda like drawing a sheathed sword rather than grabbing a sword from a case.

Save the money and save for a safe.

A safe won't be necessary. I only have a Rem 870 after selling my 9mm. The safe takes up too many space in the bedroom.

Sounds like a good idea. Go for it. The scabbard is not that expensive, If it doesn't work out you can re-sell or trade.

I just bought a remington 870, I was thinking of grabbing a scabbard, So I know that you dont need to lock a long gun and you just keep it unloaded. However what about the six rounds sitting in a side saddle..

My interpretation is no ammo affixed to the gun in anyway, not sure though yet.

Ammo can be attached to the gun in any form and be perfectly legal to transport. As long as the ammo is not in a position to be "readily fed" into the gun (ie. magazine, or maybe a shell taped in the loading port

This is a perfectly legal way to transport a shotgun.
