    Brought home my Mossberg 500A...

...and now I need to decide on ammo to buy.

Right now, I'm mainly looking for good home defense ammo. Nothing too expensive or fancy, but good enough to make someone regret trying to forcefully come into my home.

I'd recommend Remington Reduced Recoil 00 buckshot - it patterns reasonably accurate out of Mossberg barrels and is a popular LEO load... A surprising find are the 2 3/4" Fiocchi 00 9 pellet loads - light on the recoil and pattern well. Both of these loads also had the least (no) fliers of the ones I patterned - you really want to stay away from 00 buckshot that has more than 9 pellets - it seems that the more you cramp in there, the more fliers you get... And that's not something you want in HD load.

Birdshots for fun time on the range.
      OO Buckshots, Federal, Remington, Winchester
      Slugs, same manufacturers

All available at your local friendly Big 5 at decent prices.....

Buy whatever is cheap at Wal Mart slugs and buck. Don't worry about flyers at typical hd distance. With a 30 foot shot your pattern should be about 10 inches. That gives you 4.5 inches on each side of the pattern and plenty of up and down.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

Aguila Mini-shells. Total fun. The best ammo ever....

Out of my 500A, Remington Reduced Recoil 00 didn't pattern well at all. Federal Vital-Shok performed great though.
