    Remington 1100

    Hey,

Just bought one of these.. I have a M1014 Benelli, but I'm not up to speed on the 1100

I has a very long barrel (30+ inches) so the first thing is to find a shorter one.. I don't need tacticool 18, but I was thinking 21" which I heard should work fine with the standard gas ports. Thoughts?

Besides used on gun broker any clues?

It has beautiful checkered wood furniture so I'm not changing that but I would like a mag extension tube.

What other upgrades should I look into? I heard theres some deal you can do to make loading easier.

Any advise or help would be appreciated, I will post pics when she is out of jail.

Congrats on a great pickup. I love mine, although it's strictly for sporting use.

Cabela's, Midway or any of the larger vendors will have barrels. 1100 barrels are a bit more spendy than 870 barrels. The gas ports are built into the barrel, changing barrels doesn't effect that as the ports will match the given length of barrel. Physically shortening a longer barrel would effect the performance of the gas ports in a negative way.

If you want a plain bead sighted 21 inch barrel, this is one of the better choices in the line. And it takes Rem-Choke tubes.

If you want a rifle sighted barrel, then consider this.

Buy a few extra O rings (Midway has them). While they don't fail often, when they do it's always at an inopportune time.

Any Remington mag extension should would just fine.

I know I may tick some people off, but this is what I think.

I have a 1100 20ga, loading for me is not so good, as you have to trip the bolt release each and every round you load into the magazine.

I bought a Mossberg 930, load a round in the chamber, push the button to close the bolt and you can load the magazine without having to press the bolt release for each and every round loaded. Works much better for me.

If there is a mod for the 1100 bolt release, I am unaware.

      John

PS: You can buy a 930 two Barrel Combo.

Think I scored a barrel off Gunbroker for $100.. the rifled barrel you linked to. The 1100 will my dedicated slug gun since it has the longer barrel. My M1014 will be buck since it's shorter.. seemed to make sense at least.

Gotcha on the O-rings and such.. once it's out of jail I can tear it down and inspect, it doesn't look shot much.

Looking at various charging handles and better safety buttons.. maybe a fiber-optic front sight? I guess I'm more curious about who makes the best stuff.. best mag tube (what length for 21" barrel??)

Also need to find an instruction book for teardown and such..

You simply need to instal part number 300902 which is the Competiton Master with extended carrier release. It sells on the Remington parts list for $31. It makes loading the 1100 or 11-87 the same as loading an 870. It makes it easier to use the end of the shell to push the release on the carrier which is how you load one of these weapon. So if the guy who got the Mossberg would have simply learned to load his 1100 he would have been fine.

Give the operating rod and piston seals a good cleaning, as well as the outside of the mag tube. Going real easy with the lube on the tube and operating rod sleeve has worked well for me, and make sure you put the piston seal rings back on in the proper direction.

I recommend aippi's method of polishing the inside of the mag tube and the chamber. It's the best.

If you drop the trigger group out give a good look see to the inside of the receiver and give it a good scrub. Every 1100 I've owned or cleaned has gotten gunky behind the bolt. My late father in law's gun (he knew nothing about good cleaning apparently) was horridly gunky. I think he just squirted liquid lube in there and walked away.

Do not disassemble the trigger group. There is no need. Some squirts with Gun Scrubber or carb cleaner will do what needs to be done.

Looking at various charging handles and better safety buttons.. maybe a fiber-optic front sight? I guess I'm more curious about who makes the best stuff.. best mag tube (what length for 21" barrel??)

As above... the manual is online at Remington.com.

Safety button... Vang oversized. No need to look anywhere else.

Extensions... Remington OEM is fine. A three shot will get you close to flush with the muzzle. If you don't want to use a bracket then be prepared to pay for a Wilson extension. Nordic Components is also excellent gear, IMO. You could put a 5 shot extension on, but that's going to reach several inches out in front of your muzzle at a 21 inch barrel.

Fiber optic replacement front post... there are several out there, I don't have a preference. Depending on your ultimate use, you might consider fiber optic and tritium.

If you plan to use it solely for slugs and perhaps hunting, you might consider a saddle rail from Mesa Tactical for mounting an optic.

ETA... is the OEM barrel a fixed choke or is it with choke tubes?

I would go with the Competition Master with the extended carrier release.
The Dave's is nice but it has to be installed right or will cause lots of issues.
I would not use the Mesa Tactical on a semi auto. The mounting bolts can be tightened too much and cause malfunctions. If it has a vent rib, go with the Williams Slugger sights. If you want a side saddle get the velcro one that is glued on. Works great.
Had one on my 1100 for 5 years before I had to replace it. 3 Gun Gear is the best.
I ran my 1100CM clean and very wet. Mobile 1, and Rem Oil. Get a spare piston and as mentioned extra o-rings.

I could be mistaken but I recall reading somewhere that Remington discontinued the 1100 Competition Master a while back.

                          Great gun though....

Big Dog - I Don't know anything about that model as I deal in LE Models and the part I gave is still offered on the parts list as it is the same carrier that comes on the 11-87P. I could not even find that carrier my first year in business and none of the cubical people could tell me a part number. Then I got lucky when Pete answered the phone and he knew exactly what I was asking for and gave me the part number and of course I ordered a bunch and keep them in stock for rebuilds. The issue was that it is on the 1100 parts list and not the 11-87 parts list but is the same carrier used on the 11-87 Police and since I was asking for an 11-87 none of those parts people could find it. Pete however, knows his stuff and has since been promoted so is no longer a parts rep. And if anyone reading this knows him, please do not tell him JD was talking good about him.

I have never had an issue with this carrier nor have any of my clients. I have never read about an issue with this carrier. I have read multiple issues with that after market one but I think most come from improper modification and install. So I would opt for the OEM carrier that is proven and is out there on duty all over this country.

Yes, Remington did discontinued the Competition Master. They came out with the Tac 4? Same gun same issues.
Remington is suppose to come out with a Versa Max Tactical soon, but it is only set up for 7+1. Won't be good for 3 gun, need 8+1. and only a 18" barrel.
Needs 21-22". Robbie Johnson from the AMU, sponsored by Remington now is running the Vera Max. Will be interesting to see how it goes for him.
