    Help With L.C Smith Double-12 w/pics

Have this posted at the L.C> Smith Collectors Association site too. Barrels are 18.5" and OAL is 28 3/8".

My mother-inlaw gave me her past husbands double barrell Hunter Arms 00, Fulton New York and I have no clue it's period. Pre-13?

I also could use help on where the SN is located? Can't seem to find it anywhere on the gun.

What are your impressions of what I have?

    Thanks

    L.C. Smith Double

I may be wrong but looks as if someone ruined a Classic old Double Gun.

    If so ...sad indeed.

    POWG is out.

I'd say that if it has non-laminated (non-"Damascus") steel barrels, you need to find a decent used or replacement stock and keep this as home defense gun or sell it to a Cowboy Action player. Not much collector value left, and while you could use it for bird hunting, short barrels like that aren't usually conducive to good wingshooting.

I believe that L.C.Smith called their modern steel barrels "Armory Steel" and it should say that somewhere on the barrels. But if you pull off the forend, you should be able to see if there is "Damascus" pattern on the relatively unworn parts under the forend. If it has "Damascus" barrels, it would be mainly useful for parts and could be sold as such. One can have laminated "Damascus" barrels monoblocked and replaced with modern steel tubes, but it costs much more than this gun is worth. (Bubba wins again......).

Wow, if that thing could only Talk, looks like an old stagecoach guard gun, or maybe on it's way to a Gang Fight.. Are those percussion cap nipples or exposed firing pin links? It is Kool though......

            I LOVE IT

probably a 2 & 3/4 shooter - perfect gun for proppong up behind door. lOVE THE STOCK.

The stock was realy thought out and made heavy duty, Some one made a strong functional stock one of the best I have ever seen.

But I think measure the chambers and let the good times role baby.

Any way I have way more ugly hack jobs than this - stock looks like a convertion from a modern black powder gun - nice wood though.

            THIS IS A NICE GUN!!!

Never dry fire rabbit ear shot guns or derringers - use good snap capps with brass spring loaded primer.

In fact I wish my GRAND MA was alive she would want of these made for her. It is a prefect SUNDAY GO TO MEETING GUN. Not a collector so give a real blue-ing good - clean it up, Small and handy - would not get tangled up getting in or out of pughes.

Often the serial numbers were stamped on the water table (the flat area when you open the action) or under the forend.

Definitely the ruination of what was probably a fine old double. Stock looks to be an aftermarket judging by the fit and the size / shape of the grip.

The appearance of the barrels from the photos don't indicate damascus. What would concern me is that the gun was made for blackpowder shells. Might also be a 2.5 inch chamber so definitely have the chambers measured. I have a L.C. Smith hammerless in my safe at home that I know is rated for smokeless shells and has 2.75 inch chambers. I'll check it later tonight and see what kind of markings you might try looking for.

The bores are in bad shape. Would never shoot this gun.

Have since found out it's circa 1914.

So looking at mine, which is a 1907 vintage...

** Serial number on the inside of the receiver under the right barrel, patent dates on the opposite side under the left barrel.

** Serial number on the flat under the left chamber.

** Serial number on the metal portion, inside of the handgaurd facing the barrel.

** Proof marks (on my gun) on the underside of both barrels.

** "Armor Steel" on top of the right barrel and "Hunter Arms Maker" on top of left barrel.
