    Choke needed for 870

    Hey everybody,

I had one of those days at the trap range yesterday where I practically didn't hit anything... (kina ruined my first day off)

I was thinking of getting a choke for my Remington 870 to improve my patterns and hopefully my overall hits.

    Any suggestions?

What choke is in it. Can't recommend one unless we know which tube is currently installed.

It's just the standard 18 1/2" barrel from Remington... smooth bore, no choke.

If it is not threaded for Rem Choke tubes you can not change the choke. An 18.5" barrel is more of a fighting barrel then a Sporting barrel. Yes, you can shoot clays with it but for serious Sport shooting you want the 26" or 28" Vent Rib Rem Choke barrel. This longer barrel is better for wing shooting.

You were shooting a Cyl Bore which is no choke and throwing a very large pattern. Yes, it can be done but not prefered for Sport shooting. With the barrel I recommended you can screw in an Imporved Cyl or Skeet choke and obtain better resluts. There are a veriaty of chokes for this barrel and some of the serious clay shooters with post in with more information then I have on the subject.

Best bet would be to order a second barrel, fitted for choke tubes. If you are going to be shooting trap, like formal on a range starting 16 yards back from the trap house, I'd recommend a 28 to 30 inch barrel with the Modified tube in it to get started. Depending on where you source it could be a couple hundred dollars. The alternative would be to try and find one that someone who has tacticooled their gun took off it.

You can shoot trap, again formally, with a fighting length barrel and a Cylinder or Improved Cylinder choke, I have any number of times, but it's best with above a novice level of skill. Hand thrown clays, with the thrower right next to you or in front of you would be a lot more fun with the shorter barrel.

            Choke needed for 870

To become proficient in any shooting discipline you need the correct basic equipment.

To have fun on the trap field a standard pump or auto loader with 28" barrel will get you started. If it is a recent vintage gun [made in the last 15 or so years], choke tubed barrels are virtually common issue; and Improved Cylinder, Lite-Modified or Modified will work.

Note with that said ...it is the norm for factory choke tubes to be "off" by as much as 2 > 3 degrees of actual choke from what is marked. You must know with certainty the internal bore diameter of your barrel and also the choke tubes because the "choke", which is the constriction of the internal diameter of the bore is the difference between bore & tube diameter. Bottom line reality is that the designation of the "choke" marked on the outside of the choke is likely incorrect.

As I have posted numerous times ...Guns are tools & so are choke tubes. You cannot "purchase game" through new/additional choke tubes, or for that matter any other gadgets.

You are invited to check our Thread for Shotgun Clinics by Target Solutions. The $50 spent will put you on the path to success and sounds as if it may impart an understanding of the importance of quality training which is actually the only shortcut to success.

You are welcome to bring your HD gun to play toward the conclusion of the clinic if you like and we can create some special targets that will work for your gun. You would however need to use one of our guns for the primary instruction.

As of today the August 28th Clinic is 33% full and will fill quickly as hunting season is fast approaching.

Our "satisfaction guarantee" is real ...although over 17 years now we have never used it!

Enough said for now ...POWG is out.

I agree with everyone else, some of those 18.5 don't have barrels and you might want to consider a second barrel at a longer length (at least 24 inches or + , i have 26 , 28 and 30's)

                ><

One of the best thing you can do for yourself is a lesson with the club instructor.

Some basic shotgun knowlage and some basic wing shooting skills will serve you better then the next 8 boxes of shells or a barrel with choke tubes.

There is whole world of fun sitting outside the HD box.

                  Choke needed for 870

Ditto the Feeder man ...and all of the skills developed are transferable, whether good or bad.

We should all be grateful for all of the new shooters and interest in the Shooting Sports - and should hope that everyone makes at least an initial investment in some quality training. If nothing else ...and believe me, there will be much more; after some training you will surely realize just how much you did not know at the inception of the session and I can virtually guarantee you will have a thirst for more.

If in Nor-Cal, check out Clinic Threads by Target Solutions [yours truly] all gunners are welcome as we are fortunate to have approval for "HD" gunners to play ...just not with Slugs or Buckshot.

We are working on a Slug/Buckshot solution and hope to have more info shortly!
