Is this safe to do so?

    Hello everyone,

I'm new to the shotgun platform, I've recently purchased a Mossberg 500A 12 Gauge which I believe to be from the 1960-1970's era. It has a "full choke" 30" barrel that is capable to accept 2 3/4 - 3" shells, in which I have chopped down to 19" in length. My question is, I purchased from 2 3/4" 1 oz. rifled hollow point slugs, would it be safe to shoot them through my Mossberg? also, what does "full choke" mean?

It means that the part of the barrel that you threw away had a mild constriction near the muzzle that was once meant to alter the pattern of shot.

Briley is the BIGGEST and BEST shotgun choke tube manufacturer IN THE WORLD!

Ah, I see, thank you! So it seems now that when I fire shells that have pellets, they would just spread freely and have a wider range.

I imagine your shotgun now has a 'cylinder choke' since the 'full choke' it did have was near the end of the barrel that was removed. Now you can shoot nearly anything out of there safely. The full choke is meant to keep patterns tighter at longer distances, but with a 19" barrel your work should be close up anyway.

Anything 40-50 years old should seriously be checked out by a reputable gunsmith before you shoot slugs or any hotter loads through it - metal fatigue with older guns is no joke

Is this safe to do so?

The apparent un-intended consequence here in the rush to "HD", is a gun that is now very limited in its use and effectiveness at much over 20 yards, if that.

POWG decides to point out here that most any Shotgun can and will well serve its family in an "HD" situation, especially when in the hands of someone who is familiar with it ...and competent, i.e., one who is trained, well practiced and in all respects prepared.

Seemingly lost in all of this "HD" frenzy ...and POWG is not in any way against HD weapons ...is the cold, hard reality that the "D" means DEFENSE; and the "H" means HOME. When the dreaded day comes that you must make the decision to shoot it best be in the home and it best be a defensive shoot, meaning that you must have established and maintained your defensive position and not "gone a huntin".

Following that line of thought to it's logical conclusion - would seem to dicate that the more basic your gun and the less "tactical" or "assault" you and it appears to the "anti crowd" ...the better off you will be.

Just some food for thought - POWG is out.
