    Remington 870 Wingmaster

I just purchased an 870 wingmaster for a good price. It has the long 30'' beaded barrel. My question is: The barrel has a little surface rust on it and the inside of the barrel shows some too, I'm planning on cleaning it to see if it cleans up. I want to get a shorter barrel and use it for HD, can I just purchase a shorter barrel for any 870 or do I need to get one specifically for the wingmaster.

    Thanks in advance,

All 12ga 870 barrels fit any 12ga 870. Your weapon is a blued finish and Remington offers two barrels in a blued finish that would be useful for HD. An 18.5" bead sight I/C part # 242252and a 20" bead sight I/C part #242253. They are of course chambered in 3" as all most all new barrels except those for the Super Magnum which are 3.5". If you receiver ends in the letter "M" then you can shoot 3" shells. If it ends in the letter "V" then you can only shoot 2 3/4" shells even though the barrel is chambered for 3". The 18.5" retails on the Remington parts list for $150 and the 20" for $117.

If you are not pickey about the finish the 18.5" parkerized Bead sight I/C is the same barrel as the blued 18.5 but is part number 242243 and retails for $101.

aippi, thanks for the info. The barrel say to shoot only 2.75 or smaller shells, so even if I were to get a new barrel I would only be shooting this size. Color doesn't matter, price does so I'll look into the parkerized barrel.

        Thanks,

Barrel marking is not indicative of what the receiver can handle. As Aippi posted above, check the serial number on your gun. That will tell you the receiver length. And a brand new made barrel is almost certainly going to have a three inch chamber.

Not saying you have to shoot 3 inch shells, just suggesting to not artificially limit yourself.

Understood, I checked my serial number and it end with a "V", so I'm limited to the 2.75 shells. No biggie. Now I just need to come up with money to purchase the new barrel.

              Thanks for all the info,
