Help me with shotgun shell lingo.

(for real though) They didn't seem to have much. I found some 8 shot, and some 00 behind the glass, but it was kinda pricey. I don't need it for HD so the cheap crap will be all I need for a good time!

Ckeck out the other birdshot shells...in 2 3/4 and 3".......the different Dram, the shot sizes, the different oz.

Try some full house bird/ hunting loads....... 2 3/4", 1 1/4oz, 3 3/4 Dram eq.

Generally, it all comes down to what you find is best for you in your gun. Skeet ranges generally want you to use 9's over 8's.. 9's break the clays just fine and limits the distance the most with how far the shot will go. I used to use #8's for trap at the 16 yard line and 7.5's when shooting handicap. I also chose the lighter 1 ounce load to be more economical and I liked the lighter recoil.

When hunting Doves, 7.5 or 8 is fine.. I like the little bit of extra reach afforded by the larger size shot, but that's me.. I also tend to load a bit hotter than standard for that 1 1/8 oz charge, usually in the 1250 fps range.. I don't know that it really makes a difference. One year I used an ounce of 9's and found that I was unable to make shots on Dove that I'd previously made with the larger sized shot moving a bit faster.. If you shoot at Doves inside of 20-25 yards, the point is moot. If you are regularly shooting at them on crossing shots out at the outer fringes of 45 yards, I'd go with the larger size of shot at the faster velocity.. again, these are my preferences..

I've loaded shotshells in three different compositions (Steel, Tungsten, and lead) and have found some loads to be excellent, and some only so-so. I've found that the tungsten is really effective on ducks and geese, but not to the point to justify the $1.25/round. When I miss (and I do miss now and then) 3 shots at that price makes my wallet scream..

There are a lot of choices out there.. the dividing line is what you are willing to spend on the different shells out there. Long ago I chose to reload shotshells, so I have most of the components I need to load what I want, not what wally world might have in stock or not. I like the fact that there are so many choices... for a beginner it can all be confusing.. but with a little knowledge (hence the reccomendation on the shotshell loading manual and the information it affords) you can do very well with your scattergun.

I dunno.,. my pants are not on the ground, and I've likely fired at least 10,000 rounds through my "Mossy"... I have been accused of being a goofball before... but not after I've shown what I can do with my "Mossy".. My other pet names for it are "Mushberg" and "That old POS pump gun"... not to be confused with the Mossy that I wear (Mossy oak camo for hunting).

Charts are not to scale - they will give you a idea of comparitive shot sizes. Also #2 buck I drew .22caliber aprox - need to add 000buck .36caliber six pelets per 2-3/4" shell.

IF all the pelets hit, 000buck is like getting shot with 6 .36caliber cap and ball revolvers at the same time.

IF all the pelets hit, 00buck is like getting shot with 8 or 9 .32caliner cap and ball revolvers at the same time.

Did you want shot or buck = 00buck 8 or 9 pellets.

When you buy SLUGG and SABOT rounds - the salesperson should ask you if you want shells for a smooth bore or rifled barrel. If every one is clueless about this - look in the microscoptic writing on the side of the box. - it SHOULD say if the slugg or sabot shell is for a smooth or rifled bore.

That looks like the chart taken out of the lyman manual. Pretty cool This is of course for only Lead pellets, Steel, tungsten, Bismuth, etc will have slightly different downrange energies and arrival times.. Steel being 70% the weight of lead is going to act different but it usually starts off out of the shell faster..

Dram equivalent - powder load
1 1/8 oz. - how much shot is in there.
7 1/2 shot - how big the shot is. (Larger the number = smaller shot)

I say it can be better than not having a shotgun, but birdshot is for birds.

As for using it as bird shot it wouldn't be my first choice. I mean if that's all you got then use it.
