Is there a "gold standard" in rifle sights right now?

I will be shooting 90%/10% Slugs/00 Buck and would prefer not to use ghost rings.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

For both the 870 and the 11-87

I put a ramp front sight and adjustable rear sight on my first Mossberg 500. It had an 18.5 inch barrel and I hunted bobwhite quail, ducks and deer with it.

I don't care for the ghost rings when shooting slugs at anything over 50 yards. The remington rifle sights work much better for me.

There are 110 barrels for the 870 and one of the best for slugs and buckshot is the 18.5" rifle sight parkerized barrel in I/C or modified. The Express version only comes in 20" but of course any 12ga 870 barrel fits any 12ga 870 so the 18.5" is the way to go. Modified choke stabalizes the slug the best and gives you great patterns.

The 11-87 has fewer options but the rifle sight 18.5" I/C Rifle sight Police will get the job done. On thing is that you will only be able to shoot slugs, buckshot and some of the other heavy loads with this barrel.

There several tritium inserts made for the Remington barrels. I prefer the Meprolight by Kimber over the others but the Zone 3 sights are good value. Trijicons are to big for me and over priced in my opinion.

If you have a vent rib then the Williams Fire Sight Sluggers are great.

Is it unreasonable, price wise, to purchase rifle sights and have them installed on the barrels I already own?

Yes, unreasonablle. the sights fit into a base. If you have a bead sight barrel then you have to have the bead sight base removed and a front and rear base installed. The heat to do this with is not good on the barrel and of course destroys the finish so you have to refinish the barrel. Buy the time you pay for sight bases, sights, install and refinishing you can buy a new barrel. If you have a vent rib barrel on your 870 then it is most likely 26 to 26 long and those clip on sights are not a good option nor is putting rifle sight on that long of a barrel.

Cutting the barrel down is make no sence as the VT barrel is $200 and the 18.5" Rifle sight I/C barrel is $138. So you would be cutting down a $200 and installing clip on type rifle sights that cost, I don't know what they cost, but they cost. Do the math, it just make sense to get the correct barrel.

I have the 18.5 bead barrel on my 870 and I think my 11-87 barrel is maybe just a hair longer
