Help a Newbie Choose

Went to the Turner's show at Raahauge's this weekend - twice. Shot about every shotgun brand there. At least all I was able to find in two days.

I'm wanting to get into trap/skeet and have not ever owned a shotgun. I seem to shoot them quite well so I'm excited. Please help me choose a first time trap/skeet gun from what I think are my target guns:


Beretta - A400 Xplorer Light. Semiauto, gas, nice wood, Ni finish very light and super awesome. Shoot all day, 2 3/4' & 3"

Benelli - Vinci. Semiauto, inertial loading, synthetic. Camo or blk. Very smooth and light. Great recoil pad though not as nice as the Beretta. Easy aim. Great gun. 2 3/4' & 3"

Remington - 1100 Competition. Semiauto, inertial loading, nice wood. Twin bead sites, super nice shooter. 2.3/4 optimized

Remington - Versa Max. Semiauto, gas, synthetic. Shoots all loads. Very customizable. Soooo easy to shoot. Near 0 recoil

These are all ~$1400/$1600 guns. Which would you go with for general trap/skeet shooting. Thanks for the help!

EDIT: Price is MSRP. I'm finding these about $1100/$1200 range.

I'd take an 1100. Exceptionally sound design with millions in circulation and it lends itself to fitting and fine tuning.

Of course, I am a bit biased because I just bought a very nice one here on CGN at less than a third of the price range above. Check around in the for sale forum for a bit before you shell out big bucks. There've been some very nice shotguns turning up in the for sale forum lately, and some excellent bargains.

Thanks, that's the plan alright. I didn't want price to enter in the discussion but I'm targeting a usede gun for far less - I have two een kollege!

Vinci... Gun is light weight, has minimal kick, and top quality. Can't go wrong.

No preference....It will be YOUR shotgun.

I will add to not overlook an O/U (new or used) in the same price range.

For semi's...I am a huge Beretta fan. I haven't shot the A400 but have lots of experience with the 390/391 series. I love those things!

Thanks for the tip! I figured I'll chcek it out and WOW, although a Beretta 686 White Onyx goes for $2k+ new, I found very nice ones used for <$1k - that surprised me.

A400s are $1400 new and I can't find any under $1100/$1200! What up with that?

Good going....what ever you choose....go with something with interchangable choke tubes.

Lots of Citori and Orions out there in that price range, Buy the one that feels good in your hands and fits you and the choice will be easy.

Hang out at the local club and ask if you can shoulder their shotgun.....many will let you shoot them as well
