Buying a used Shotgun...

I am thinking about buying a used shotgun for HD, and I saw a couple cal-guner members selling theirs in the marketplace. I am thinking of looking into some sort of a remmington 870. My question is, since this will be my first SG, what should I look out for when buying a used SG. Thanks

You will receive many good suggestions. Here is a mediocre one: look at police trade-ins. I bought two 870P's many years ago which were CHP trade-ins. Moderate exterior wear and interior wear. Parkerized finish, 18.5" barrel, bead front sight, hardwood stocks; a good platform for modest modification or use as-is.
