I had the same question. I do have truck but my primary mode of transpo is my sportbike.

Technically it would be a concealed weapon. Not sure if an officer would enforce it. I think legally you would have to have a sling on it and have it wear it can be seen. Basically "open carry". Though you may be in the right I'm sure you'll get stopped for some reason.

A coworker told me he had to go to the gunsmith and all he had was a motorcycle so he put his holster on over his jacket so the firearm wasn't concealed. He did get pulled over and the cop asked him why he was transporting it like that and did agree he was in the right.. Said the officer followed him to the gunsmith

I'm hoping I never have to carry my handgun on my bike but for some freak reason I have to.. I'll have it in my backpack in a locked case but I will also have the backpack zippers locked together.. 12 gauge... I've never had to transport it cause everytime I went shooting with it, I had a truck or someone picked me up

Does the concealed weapon law apply to long guns?

No, if the barrel length and overall length requirements are met, it is by definition unconcealable. Spectre is incorrect regarding the shotgun. Why his friend UOC instead of putting his handgun in a container I don't know.

Even if it is legal to carry a shotun in a sling or even in a gun case on your motorcyle, is it wise. Do you want some low life following you home and breakikng in to steal your firearms?

I would suggest somekind of case, I think they may call it a take down case when it is designed to hold your broken down gun, that doesn't say gun inside. I beieve some use a guitar case.

I used to wonder if it was indeed legal decades ago when I sometimes wore a P38 while riding my bike. Of course it was unloaded, but the loaded magazine was kept tucked into the comparment stitched on the side of the holster. I was stopped once in a while, but the officers were treated me well as I did them and I never had a problem. I think that is what you now call UOC.

Decades ago there was not the school zone law, which UOC can violate in an eyeblink.

True, Even now I am concerned that I may driving through one to or from the range. Back then the risk of being blown off your bike kind of negated the potential hassle from law enforcement and, as I said, they were fine if treated decently.

I appologize on not knowing there was a length stipulation on concealment. That is actually very good to know..

Now knowing there is such a thing, I guess if I had to transport my 12g on the bike I'd put it in a soft guitar case.. That way people won't know what I'm transporting..

Hmm.. ideas... Now I can spend more money on ammo and less on gas for the truck.

As for the guy not putting the handgun in a container. He stated there was no container on his motorcyle. It was either over or under his jacket.. ( I personally would of put it in a small locked box and put it in my backpack if I had to do something like that.)

I believe a back pack qualifies as a container if it can be locked, as when a zippered pocket can be locked.

I thought it would be considered if I was to lock the zippers together like you can with a suitcase, but unfortunately I have a zipper on the side for laptops and that would allow me to bypass the main zippers and lock. So I figured put it in a locked case inside the backpack would be a safe bet.

A few of questions about this, I bought a soft case for my shotgun, can I have ammo in the case with the gun like this (well, zipped up of-course)?

To drive/walk around town regardless of whether I'm in a school zone or not, does the gun have to be locked or should the case be locked? Both? Neither?

From the DOJ. (Though it doesn't say anything about ammo) Weird..

Nonconcealable firearms (rifles and shotguns) are not generally covered within the provisions of California Penal Code section 12025 and therefore are not required to be transported in a locked container. However, as with any firearm, nonconcealable firearms must be unloaded while they are being transported. A rifle or shotgun that is defined as an assault weapon pursuant to Penal Code 12276 or 12276.1 must be transported in accordance with Penal Code section 12026.1.
I've been doing some quick lookin and searching but I don't see anything about ammunition. I'm not sure what the exact law is, but I'd play it safe and keep 1 in the trunk and the other in the back seat. But I'm just overly cautious with this whole subject.

                            That wouldn't be required

You can carry an unloaded shotgun, pistol or rifle in the Trunk with ammunition in the same area. (As long as the weapons are unloaded)

                            No problem.

The big problem with carrying ammo on the back seat is a Police officer can assume PC and request an E check. Some departments cuff you up on the curb while they E check your weapons and rip thru your trunk. Not fun.

                              From the Highway Patrol Website

                              "
I will be traveling to California and want to carry my weapon. I currently have a concealed weapon permit. How can I legally transport my weapon while driving through the state?

California law does not recognize concealed weapon permits from other states; therefore, they would not be held valid. If you wish to transport a handgun during your California visit, it should be carried unloaded in a locked container. In the absence of a suitable container, you may secure the unloaded handgun in the locked trunk of a passenger car. Ammunition may be kept in the same container or trunk, but the handgun must remain unloaded with no rounds in the cylinder and no loaded magazines in the magazine well.
