I recently purchased my first shotgun, I had about a $1000 to spend and was on the fence about what to get, my buddies wanted me to get a lower end M4 but I really wanted a shotty and ended up going that route. The problem Im having is that I don't know S!?t about the different ammunitions for shotguns besides the basic birdshot, buckshot, slug and what they are for, when shopping for it I have no idea what is decent and what isn't, 3inch or 2 3/4 ect. Can anyone give me a quick rundown because I really would like to be more educated on the different types. Thanks a lot......Kenny

Shotgun Shell help

yes a search on the forums here will give you a good turn out. But in a nut shell
Most common is 2 3/4 , the stuff you see at walmart, that says 6, 7, 8 shot is mainly bird shot that you use for clays, fowl hunting, etc.
3" shots are only used if your gun is chambered in a 3" magnum , otherwise, you might not be able to shoot that length of shell. What kind of shotgun do you have?
There is also 00 buckshot and slugs, which are used for hunting and Self defense. Mind you remember the one rule is to make sure you shoot the gauge your gun supports, iv'e seen some really stupid people buy 20 gauge and almost make the mistake of shoving it in their 12 gauges, etc.
hope that helps!Be the change that you wish to see in the world.Mahatma Gandhi

Thanks you very much, The Shotgun is an H&K Fabarm Tactical 12g, are all 3"
shells Magnums? I have only run cheap 2 3/4 Birdshot and a couple of 3" 00 through the gun, it had trouble feeding the 3" from the tube I was hoping it was just that particular brand but I have a lot to learnComment

I will be happy to meet you at any range in Southern California and give your some tips on the use of a shotgun, and the different types and uses of available ammunition, IF you promise to stop using the word "shotty". I don't know where it came from or when it started; l find it really grating to my traditional sense of american history and propriety. It is not a word associated with traditional values or the legitimate use of a shotgun.Last edited by 003; 04-19-2011, 7:13 PM.Comment

I used the word Shotgun twice and said Shotty once, I can't believe the amount of tools on this site, if you ask a question you have to deal with the people telling you to use the search function, then you have the grammar police, and now I have this guy telling me the term I used for a Shotgun is "grating to his traditional sense of American history and propriety" I have never encountered a forum where people go out of their way with their sence of entitlement like they do here at calguns, and it's really sad because I'm Sure it annoys the folks that started this site with the hopes of gaining support for civilian gun ownership and the RKBA, I can't imagine the amount of people that are turned away by rude members trying to make themselves feel more E-ImportantI will be happy to meet you at any range in Southern California and give your some tips on the use of a shotgun, and the different types and uses of available ammunition, IF you promise to stop using the word "shotty". We live right next to each other maybe we can meet at a range someday, I will mainly be using it for HD, but I plan on practicing with it constantly so I think I'm looking for a universal round of buckshot. But again I have a lot to learnComment
